Personal Financial Planning

Position Description

The School of Financial Planning in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for a full-time, 9-month Professor of Practice in Personal Finance position to begin Spring 2025 or Summer 2025. This is a non-tenure track, multi-year renewable appointment contingent on successful annual and cumulative performance appraisals as well as a majority affirmative vote of the academic unit. Summer appointments are possible, but not guaranteed, contingent on demand for courses and funding availability.

About the Department/School/Area


  • The School of Financial Planning offers a B.S. in Applied Personal Finance, and a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning. All Personal Financial Planning programs are registered with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. All programs meet the education requirement for the AFC certification.
  • Three dual degrees are offered: JD/MS in PFP, MBA/MS in PFP, and MS Tax/MS PFP and a minor in Agricultural Economics Ph.D. is also supported.
  • Graduate certificates in Charitable Financial Planning and Financial Health and Wellness are provided as well as a professional MS degree delivered in a hybrid format at the TTU DFW location.
  • An online minor in Personal Finance and courses to meet the financial literacy needs of students are offered.
  • Enrollment of majors includes approximately 240 undergraduate students and 210 graduate students, of which 37 are doctoral. There are 126 Personal Finance minors and 555 Personal Finance concentrations.
  • Faculty positions currently include 11 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 4 professors of practice, 4 lecturers, and adjunct faculty who work as a team to accomplish the school's collective goals.
  • Students take classes and study in the 4,200 square foot Charles Schwab/PFP Technology Complex.
  • The Center for Financial Responsibility offers research and outreach opportunities for the financial planning faculty and graduate students.
  • Knowledge Empowering You (KEY) utilizes Personal Financial Planning students to provide educational outreach and one on one financial counseling in the Lubbock community.
  • Red to Black (through Student Services) provides peer financial planning and education for TTU students and hands-on experience for PFP majors.
  • Financial Planning Academy, funded by Charles Schwab Foundation, is a summer camp that introduces high school students to the Registered Investment Advisory industry and provides education in the core areas of personal financial management.
  • The Charles Schwab Foundation Personal Financial Planning Clinic enables our students to have direct client-facing experiences. The Clinic impacts numerous lives in the Lubbock community and provides innovative experiential learning opportunities that equip our students to be the best of the next generation of financial professionals.
  • Travel funding is supported pending funding availability for faculty to attend conferences annually for professional development and presentations, as well as funding for continuing education.

Major/Essential Functions

At Texas Tech University, the Professor of Practice title is used to recruit individuals with exceptional backgrounds and achievements in academic, business, government, or other professional practices. Primary responsibilities include administrative leadership and support as the Associate School Director and teaching in an area of expertise (to include mentoring students in professional and career preparation).

Administrative (75%)

  1. The administrative allocation of this position will consist of 75% administrative leadership and support as the Associate School Director for the School of Financial Planning. The Associate School Director will support seamless engagement of School leadership with internal and external stakeholders, foster synergy between faculty and programs (academic and outreach), manage process and procedure implementation involving multiple stakeholders, and provide leadership continuity for the school in partnership with the School Director, Executive Committee, and Program/Outreach Directors. The following functions are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, skills, work schedule, or travel for the position.
  2. Assist the School Director and fulfill tasks as needed and assigned by the School Director, CHHS Dean's office, and TTU administration.
  3. Serve as interim School Director, as needed.
  4. Attend School, College, and University events where School leadership is needed.
  5. Participate in School-Dean's office meetings.
  6. Manage the implementation of operations, processes, and procedures in collaboration with program directors, faculty, and staff.
  7. Coordinate program administration efforts, including annual planning and implementation for areas such as recruitment, marketing, events, curriculum, search committees, and faculty meetings.
  8. Academic and Outreach Program Director backup and support to bridge leadership gaps, provide administrative support where and when needed, partner with Program Directors to launch new initiatives if support is needed, and serve as a bridge between Program Directors, faculty, and staff.
  9. Represent School leadership in stakeholder groups, meetings, and conferences.
Teaching (25%)
  1. The candidate will be responsible for teaching a minimum of one class per semester in undergraduate or graduate courses in a combination of Applied Personal Finance and/or Personal Financial Planning courses.

Faculty Qualifications


  1. Candidates must have an earned Master's, Ph.D., J.D. or Ed.D. degree in Personal Financial Planning (PFP), Finance, Accounting, Economics, Consumer/Family Economics, Law, or an appropriate field.
  2. Evidence of leadership and administrative experience, including managing teams, creating and implementing processes and procedures, performance management, collaboration, and consensus building.
  3. Professional practice experience (including pro-bono experience) directly in or closely related to personal finance and personal financial planning.
  4. Evidence of teaching effectiveness as the instructor of record (includes experience teaching as a graduate student).
  5. Evidence of student or professional mentorship.

Preferred Qualifications


  1. Active professional certification relevant to personal finance and financial planning, such as the CFP and AFC certifications.
  2. Experience teaching courses specifically in a CFP Board-registered education program or AFC approved curriculum track.
  3. Prior leadership or administrative experience, specifically in higher education.
  4. Experience in developing and maintaining strong relationships with industry partners, alumni, and other stakeholders, as evidenced by evidence of outreach and service on supporting documents (resume, vita, etc).
  5. Active membership in relevant professional organizations.
  6. Excellent communication skills, both oral & written, as evidenced by supporting documents (resume, vita, etc), email correspondence, and interviews.
