Description

The Associate Director, Prospect Management and Research works as a strategic partner with front-line fundraising staff to provide prospect research support, manage prospect portfolios, track prospect activity and collaborate around prospect strategies. Reporting to the Senior Director, Prospect Management and Research, the Associate Director proactively works to expand the pool of potential prospects and is timely in responding to research requests from members of the front-line fundraising staff.

The Associate Director must apply creative thinking and be curious, focused and persistent in pursuing threads of information. They should be capable of interpreting complex documents, including corporate proxy statements and insider stock filings and possess excellent writing skills. They must be able to identify and adapt to shifting priorities, be flexible and resourceful, and exercise professionalism and discretion in working with confidential information.

The ideal candidate for this role is a collegial team player with experience in prospect research or prospect management, familiarity with a broad range of research techniques and excellent customer service skills.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities



  • Conduct research on individuals, corporations and foundations using a wide variety of prospect research resources and prepare confidential biographical and financial profiles for members of the development staff, senior management, trustee leadership and key volunteers.
  • Analyze research requests to determine appropriate level of detail required.
  • Rate the giving capacity of individual prospects.
  • Support the research needs of assigned fundraisers/fundraising teams.
  • Assist in proactively identifying major and principal gift prospects with a focus on assessing capacity and connections to Mass General.
  • Assist frontline fundraising staff in prioritizing prospect portfolios and encourage the timely review and assignment of newly identified prospects through re-occurring one-on-one portfolio review meetings and collaborative prospect strategy.
  • Facilitate the assignment of prospects to portfolios, create portfolios for new staff and reassign portfolios for departing staff.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date information on prospects and donors.
  • Track and disseminate news and information about top donors and prospects.
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Vice President and Senior Director, Prospect Management and Research,

    • Aid in process improvement initiatives for the Research team and the entire Development Office,
    • Devise and implement prospect management improvements, taking into account campaign needs, and
    • Oversee Research team data quality projects.


  • Proactively participate in professional development opportunities.
  • Prepare and regularly update progress reports.
  • Contribute to maintaining positive office morale, even in the face of high work volume and challenging periods.
  • Take on other office-wide duties at the request of Development leadership.
  • Adhere to the mission, credo, and standards of behavior of Mass General.

Qualifications

Qualifications

This position requires 5-7 years related experience and a bachelor's degree. Experience in either prospect research or prospect management is preferred.

The ideal candidate will also possess the following skills, abilities and competencies:



  • Familiarity with a broad range of research techniques, including print-based and Internet research, searching of electronic databases, interviewing, and the use of other appropriate sources and methods.
  • Excellent customer service skills, with an emphasis on relationship building.
  • Tact, discretion, diplomacy and the ability to deal with confidential information sensitively.
  • Ability to work with front-line fundraising officers in a team-oriented approach.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; superior organizational, project management, and analytical skills.
  • Honesty and trustworthiness, strong interpersonal skills, an even disposition and the abilities to interact effectively, politely and efficiently with people from all backgrounds.
  • Ability to manage multiple clients, prioritize, and meet frequent deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong editing, spelling and grammar skills and the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with co-workers and constituents.
  • Ability to anticipate needs and show initiative in managing and promoting new projects.
  • A sense of curiosity and enthusiasm towards learning is desired.
