A Brief Overview
The Biomedical Technologist III performs repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance of a wide variety of medical devices to ensure that they meet manufacturer's specifications for performance and safety. Demonstrates a mastery of skills and tasks associated with the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of complex biomedical equipment. Demonstrates a mastery of clinical equipment such as radiological, laboratory and network medical systems so that work beyond single devices can be appropriately accomplished.

Utilizes the department equipment management database to accurately record all work performed. Maintains clinical equipment through the effective use of the Medical Equipment Management Program. Functions in a team-based work environment and focuses on the achievement of team-based requirements and goals. Capable of educating others including clinical staff related to the technical integration of the device/system.

Supervises, coordinates, and performs activities related to medical device installation, de-installation, and all other actions leading to the successful completion of projects involving new and renovated clinical departments. Provides oversight on all new and replacement medical device installations, modifications, and dispositions. Validates accuracy of equipment as described by purchase order; reconciles discrepancies, and substantiate completion with Vendor, Receiving, Manager and Supply Chain. Ensures all incoming inspection tasks are met as defined by Biomedical Engineering procedures by self, team technician, or vendor. Ensures respect and cooperation exists amongst all parties, and leverage synergy to meet operational goals.

What you will do

  • Repairs broken medical devices by using experience, training, department and vendor resources so that the device meets manufacturers specification for performance and safety.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, electrical safety and functional testing of medical devices using documented department procedures and based on established schedules.
  • Maintains accurate records of all work (both productive and non-productive but not including lunch and break) using the departments equipment management database. A minimum of 90% of time is to be achieved.
  • Completes one hundred percent (100%) of all scheduled inspections within the month of assignment.
  • Orders correct parts and service items to complete the repairs and preventive maintenance. Reorders parts if the department is maintaining a stock level.
  • Works to achieve both team and department-related goals for performance and safety.
  • Attends manufacturers' technical training as determined by the Supervisor and Senior Manager. Works to become proficient on the medical device(s) and become a department expert. Provides training to other designated staff.
  • Provides assistance with the training and orientation of new technical staff.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED Required
  • Bachelor's Degree Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • At least five (5) years experience working as a Biomedical Technologist in a healthcare setting. Required
  • working as a Biomedical Technician in a healthcare setting Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, English and professional skills plus increased levels of certification and training as needed.
  • In-depth understanding of common clinical terminology as well as that of life sciences such as anatomy and physiology.
  • Comprehensive understanding of computers and network architecture.
  • Excellent technical knowledge of a broad range of medical devices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Good understanding and experience using computers, software and the use of equipment management databases.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good understanding of human physiology as it relates to the use of medical devices.
  • Works well in a team-based environment.
  • Fully experienced with an exceptional skill set or knowledge, works with minimal supervision; capable of serving as a trainer, mentor to junior and mid-level staff. Capable of performing in a lead capacity.
  • Exhibits a detailed understanding and can fully communicate the use of devices supported
  • Can provide advanced support of acuity equipment for direct patient care.
  • Has in depth understanding of the operations and environment that they support such as hospital, clinic, etc.
  • Has advanced experience in their assigned clinical environment.
  • Adept at learning on the job as well as teaching and mentoring others. Optionally has developed mastery to the level that they can mentor other mentors. Considered a "Subject Matter Expert" on high-acuity clinical devices and systems in specialized acute care areas.
  • Communicates effectively with stakeholders, colleagues, vendors, and department management team. Provides timely communication on status of all assigned projects. Provide a weekly spreadsheet via email identifying receipt of new equipment. Understand and utilize the preferred communication style in an effort to provide effective service support to all parties
  • Attends meetings, project site visits, & essential training as scheduled. Actively participates in discussions and identifies areas of concern that impact project schedule, operational flow, logistics, and cost. Verifies accuracy of standards for patient equipment being purchased.
  • Will perform on call duties as department need arises
  • Understand and comply with all enterprise and IS departmental information security policies, procedures and standards.
  • Support the integration of information security in the development, design, and implementation of Hospital Technology Resources that process, transmit, or store CHOP information.
  • Support all compliance activities related to state, federal regulatory requirements, healthcare accreditation standards, and all other applicable regulations that govern the use and disclosure of patient, financial, or other confidential information.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) - Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation - upon hire - Preferred or
  • Electronic Engineering Technology (EET) - Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation - upon hire - Preferred
