LOCATION: JOHN H. STROGER, JR. HOSPITAL SHIFT: 6:30 AM- 2:30 PM DEPARTMENT: COOK COUNTY HEALTH JOB TITLE: STUDENT SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST EXTERN JOB SUMMARY : The Student Surgical Technologist Extern is a student of a Surgical Technologist program that will observe the handling of instruments, supplies, and equipment as necessary during the surgical procedure under the direct supervision of department leadership. The Student Surgical Technologist Extern participants will develop an understanding of the procedure being performed and the needs of the surgeon. The Student Surgical Technologist Extern must commit to no more than 18 hours per week over a period of 16-weeks equivalent to a school semester. TYPICAL DUTIES: * Under direct supervision a Certified Surgical Technologist or Clinical Nurse I-Operating Room,
students will be involved in observing and participating in duties, including, but not limited to: o Assists with performing the surgical scrub while donning gown, gloves, and any other necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) o Assists with holding retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon o Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices o Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate o Uses facility approved tray and instrument tracking system per hospital policy o Provides support to team members with gowning and gloving o Participates in the sets up the sterile back table and mayo stand o Gathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment, when and as needed * Observes the surgical site and patient verification, and confirmation of instrument sterility by showing chemical indicators to attending physician/surgeon during the time out procedure * Assists in passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure * Participates in measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure * Assists other members of the team with room turnover and cleaning * Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care * Performs other duties as assigned MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * High School Diploma or GED equivalent (MUSTPROVIDEPROFFATTIMEOFINTERVIEW) KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS: * Working knowledge of the Strong interpersonal skills PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS: This position is functioning within a healthcare environment.
