JOB TITLE: STUDENT SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST EXTERN


JOB SUMMARY :

The Student Surgical Technologist Extern is a student of a Surgical Technologist program that will observe the handling of instruments, supplies, and equipment as necessary during the surgical procedure under the direct supervision of department leadership. The Student Surgical Technologist Extern participants will develop an understanding of the procedure being performed and the needs of the surgeon. The Student Surgical Technologist Extern must commit to no more than 18 hours per week over a period of 16-weeks equivalent to a school semester.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

* Under direct supervision a Certified Surgical Technologist or Clinical Nurse I-Operating Room,
students will be involved in observing and participating in duties, including, but not limited to:
o Assists with performing the surgical scrub while donning gown, gloves, and any other
necessary personal protective equipment (PPE)
o Assists with holding retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon
o Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices
o Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate
o Uses facility approved tray and instrument tracking system per hospital policy
o Provides support to team members with gowning and gloving
o Participates in the sets up the sterile back table and mayo stand
o Gathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment, when and as needed
* Observes the surgical site and patient verification, and confirmation of instrument sterility by
showing chemical indicators to attending physician/surgeon during the time out procedure
* Assists in passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure
* Participates in measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions
utilized during the surgical procedure
* Assists other members of the team with room turnover and cleaning
* Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care
* Performs other duties as assigned



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* High School Diploma or GED equivalent (MUSTPROVIDEPROFFATTIMEOFINTERVIEW)
* Currently enrolled in an Operating Room Technician/Surgical Technician, or Military Program
approved by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTA) OR
National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (Proof of enrollment will be required at time
of interview)
* Must be able to commit to no more than 18-hours per week over a period of 16-
weeks equivalent to a school semester

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

* Working knowledge of the Strong interpersonal skills
* Working knowledge of the standard concepts, practices and procedures of an operating room
* Knowledge of the standard methods of cleaning and maintaining operating room instruments,
equipment, and supplies
* Knowledge of the standard preparation of patients for surgery and post-surgery procedures
* Knowledge of healthcare needs in pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients
* Understand the procedures used in performing the duties and responsibilities of a
Scrub Attendant
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary to communicate with all levels
of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups
* Demonstrates the hospital's quality philosophy by fulfilling all commitments accurately the first
time
* Aware of patient and family rights, ethical, legal, cultural, and spiritual concerns
* Ability to bend, lift, push heavy objects
* Ability to stand, stoop, bend, and reach for extended periods
* Ability to distinguish basic colors, and shades of colors
* Ability to hear normally with or without assistive device
* Ability to recognize age specific instruments and equipment needs for pediatric, adult, and
geriatric patients
* Adheres to infection control standards
* Ability to follow CCH policies, procedures, and personnel rules

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for
adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited
to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment
requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering
and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide
policy and departmental procedures.
