Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Community Living Event Assistant position. The Community Living Event Assistant is a part-time, casual position with no benefits, starting at $20/hour. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

Ensures a safe and secure environment at student- and staff-hosted events. Provides exemplary assistance and guidance to student event hosts and guests that support a safe and vivid environment. Conducts regular check-ins of event venues, ensuring that College policies are being respected. Provides constructive coaching and behavioral intervention when appropriate.

The Community Living Event Assistant takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Work Schedule:

  • Due to the nature of the position, evening and/or weekend availability is required


The work schedule may vary, but in general, the following shifts will be in place:

  • Fridays and Saturdays, 6:00 p.m. - 2:00 a.m. during the academic year (12 weeks per semester)
  • Some weekday/daytime shifts may also be available, but at this time, we can only consider candidates who also have weekend/evening availability


Summary of Responsibilities:

Pre-Event Support
  • Contacts student event hosts to verify the start time of each event; reminds hosts of event guidelines
  • Delivers refreshments from the dining hall to each venue by vehicle
  • Observe the safe setup of furniture and other event equipment before guests arrive


Event Check-Ins
  • Continuously visits each event throughout its duration to offer support to hosts and guests
  • Responds to calls on a radio or personal cell phone from Amherst College Dispatch or Community Safety Assistants about event complaints (noise complaints, overcrowding, behaviors that conflict with College policy)
  • Develops approachable rapport with hosts and guests to encourage interaction and requests for assistance
  • Places calls for assistance from first responders, including Community Safety Assistants, Amherst College Emergency Medical Services, and Amherst College Police, when conditions warrant


Administrative
  • Documents incidents through detailed reports and conducts email correspondence as needed
  • Documents items through photos or videos when possible
  • Submit reports related to maintenance concerns, damages, or other problematic environmental conditions


Qualifications:

Required
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, problem-solving, time management, interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Proficiency with web-based forms, GMail, and the ability to use and learn other software
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and lift test
  • Valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Successful outcome of required background checks, including the Massachusetts name-based criminal record check, CORI
  • 21 years or older - may be responsible for handling alcoholic beverages
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community


Preferred
  • Previous experience working with a diverse college population
