Position Summary

Electric - Represents CPS Energy Qualified Scheduling Entity (QSE) services to optimize loads and resources in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) Real Time and Day Ahead Markets. Power trading with market counterparties to improve overall financial position. Follows ERCOT, Texas Reliability Entity (Texas RE), North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulations, protocols and operational guidelines ensuring compliance for CPS Energy with its load and generation requirements.

Gas - Provides for the safe, reliable operation of the Natural Gas transmission and distribution system for the Citizens of San Antonio and surrounding areas. Accountable for monitoring and controlling gas pipeline facilities during normal operations, abnormal conditions and emergency responses in accordance with Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Title 49 CFR Part 195. Communications for ERCOT Wholesale Market activities, generation resource and natural gas system conditions, compliance and environmental events.

Tasks and Responsibilities
An Energy Controller I should be capable of demonstrating knowledge and performing the following tasks at an entry level:
Market Operations Responsibilities



  • Perform real-time market functions for managing CPS Energy's diverse generation portfolio.


  • Support activities for the economic dispatch of generation resources, including wind, solar, energy storage, and fossil fuels.


  • Perform the duties of a QSE in the ERCOT Wholesale Market.


  • Coordinate with generation resource operators for managing all outage scheduling and testing activities.


  • Coordinate and communicate with other stakeholders, including ERCOT, Transmission Operators, and Resource Entities.


  • Utilize Generation Management System (GMS) and other energy management software to manage generation dispatch and scheduling.


  • Monitor and interpret analytical data for supporting load forecasting, energy and ancillary service dispatching, and economic optimization of generation resources.


  • Adhere to all compliance requirements of CPS Energy, NERC, and ERCOT procedures, protocols, and guidelines.


  • Communicate and coordinate with all generation resources and contracted capacity to ensure accurate resource data.


  • Perform logging activities for normal and emergency events and perform escalation of information as needed to update management.


  • Support the evaluation of energy and ancillary service trades and complete approved bilateral transactions as necessary.


  • Participate in scheduling and dispatch of Demand Response programs, utilizing a Demand Response Management System (DRMS) interface.


  • Support Day Ahead Market activities related to load purchases and generation resource offers.


  • Coordinate dispatch of Fire Department and EMS during emergency events.


  • Performs other duties as assigned.




Gas Operations Responsibilities



  • Monitor and control natural gas transmission and distribution for CPS Energy owned pipelines.


  • Maintain knowledge of CPS Energy natural gas supplies, receipt stations, pipeline locations, and capabilities.


  • Perform activities for monitoring and adjusting nomination and delivery of natural gas to generation resources.


  • Coordinate activities for communicating and responding to alarming conditions, including dispatching of field personnel.


  • Adhere to all compliance requirements of CPS Energy, PHMSA, and Control Room Management (CRM) procedures, protocols, and guidelines.


  • Utilize SCADA monitoring and control systems for managing transmission and distribution gas pipeline pressures and flows.


  • Respond to all normal and emergency events that impact CPS Energy natural gas supplies and pipeline operations.


  • Perform logging activities for normal and emergency events and perform escalation of information as needed to update management.


  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Marketing, Generation Dispatch, Instrumentation, Electronics, Computer Science or relevant field OR Gas/Power Plant Control Room Operations or Electric Grid System Operations experience.
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.
Must be an independent thinker with the ability to make sound decisions based on available information.
Must have favorable driving record.
Support at 12-hour, rotating shift schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates degree or higher in Engineering, Marketing, Economics, Power Technologies, Business Administration or related field.
  • NERC and/or ERCOT certified.
  • Valid Class C Texas Driver's License

Working Environment
General office environment with the ability to sit/stand for long periods of time. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Occasional travel away from the San Antonio area for periods of up to a week or longer to attend training sessions or other business-related events.
Occasional visits to all areas of the power plant site may be required. This position will be required to work a rotating shift schedule and is subject to being called in to assist in case of emergency at all times.
Physical Demands
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
If the use of arm and/or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that of sedentary work and if the worker sits most of the time, the job is considered light work.
