Position Summary
Winston-Salem State University ( WSSU) is pleased to conduct a national search for the Assistant Provost for Faculty Development. Housed in the Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and reporting to the Associate Provost for Academic Budget and Faculty Affairs, the Assistant Provost provides strategic leadership and oversight of the Office of Faculty Affairs and the Center for Innovative and Transformative Instruction. This position plays a pivotal role in enhancing faculty professional growth, supporting innovative teaching and learning practices, and ensuring the effective onboarding, development, and contractual support of faculty members. The Assistant Provost collaborates with faculty, staff, and administrators to foster an environment of academic excellence, innovation, and transformation in higher education.

Required Qualifications
* An earned doctorate or terminal degree in a relevant field from a regionally accredited university.
* An academic record of achievement in teaching, scholarship, and engagement appropriate for appointment as tenured faculty member at a regionally accredited four-year institution of higher education.
* At least five years of progressively responsible experience in higher education academic leadership such as a department chairperson, assistant dean, associate dean, dean, or related administrator position.
* Demonstrated expertise in faculty professional growth, tenure and promotion processes, instructional innovation, and the use of technology in teaching and learning.
* Demonstrable experience managing fiscal resources particularly for academic units at a four-year institution of higher education.
* Experience working collaboratively with administrators, faculty, and staff across various academic units.
* Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
* A commitment to shared governance and a consultative leadership style.

Preferred Qualifications
* Experience managing an organization or unit with diverse personnel.
* Experience working effectively in multicultural communities.
* Knowledge of national trends in higher education.
* Experience with regional accreditation standards.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Provost for Faculty Development must consistently demonstrate and exhibit the following competencies:

Leadership and Administrative Responsibilities (25%)
* Align the unit's work with the vision and mission of the UNC System 2022-27 Strategic Plan and the WSSU 2030 Unleash the Genius strategic plan.
* Provide strategic direction for the Office of Faculty Affairs and provide leadership to the staff working within the unit.
* Provide oversight to the Director of the Center for Innovative and Transformative Instruction ( CITI) and support the unit with developing and implementing a vision for faculty development that aligns with the university's mission, strategic goals, and commitment to academic excellence.
* Oversee the budget and financial resources of the Office of Faculty Affairs and CITI, ensuring fiscal responsibility, alignment with strategic priorities, and execution of resources that meet the needs of faculty and the broader academic community.
* Exhibit consistent mastery of institutional policies, state regulation, and federal laws to which the unit must comply.

Oversight of Faculty Affairs (25%)
* Guide the professional growth and development of new and continuing faculty members through targeted initiatives, workshops, and programs.
* Lead the tenure and promotion process, ensuring compliance with university policies and supporting faculty as they advance in their academic careers.
* Oversee the post-tenure review process, providing resources and support for continued professional development.
* Drive the onboarding and orientation of new and continuing faculty, ensuring a smooth integration into the university's academic environment.
* Manage faculty contracts and ensure accurate and timely processing of faculty-related administrative tasks.

Oversight of Faculty Instructional Development and Innovation (25%)
* Foster a collaborative space for faculty, staff, and administrators to explore innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
* Develop and promote faculty development programs that enhance instructional effectiveness, digital literacy, and student engagement.
* Lead efforts to integrate technology and innovative practices into the classroom, promoting evidence-based teaching strategies and active learning.
* Coordinate professional development workshops, seminars, and learning communities focused on pedagogical innovation and academic transformation.

Assessment, Continuous Improvement, and Partnerships (25%)
* Evaluate the effectiveness of faculty development initiatives and programs using data-driven approaches to measure impact and inform continuous improvement.
* Develop and implement assessment tools to gauge faculty satisfaction, program outcomes, and areas for growth within the Office of Faculty Affairs and the Center for Innovative and Transformative Instruction.
* Prepare and present reports on faculty development activities and outcomes to the Associate Provost, Provost, and other stakeholders.
* Collaborate with academic deans, department chairs, and other university leaders to identify faculty development needs and align resources accordingly.
* Partner with other campus units, including Institutional Assessment and Research, Career Professional Development Services, and the University College to support faculty and student success.
* Represent WSSU in regional and national networks focused on faculty development and innovative teaching practices.
