MECHANICAL ENGINEER (HVAC & PLUMBING)

As a member of the construction and infrastructure team, you will design, build, and activate some of the world's most technically advanced manufacturing facilities. You will be the subject matter expert on all compressed air, piping, dust collection and other critical fluid systems at HQ. You will have the opportunity to utilize your knowledge, experience, and creativity to develop novel solutions at the cutting edge of space technology. This role involves design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing of fluids system elements. You will work with other construction engineers, architects and internal customers to support these goals and have the opportunity to drive real global impact, ultimately leading to making life multiplanetary. The position is based in Hawthorne, CA.

RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Provide engineering support for the design, operation, improvement, and troubleshooting of all facility mechanical components and systems including compressed air, HVAC, and plumbing systems
  • Understand thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics principles and be able to run calculations independently
  • Size mechanical systems equipment such as air compressors, heat exchangers, pumps, fans, buffer tanks and all associated pipework and ductwork independently
  • Collaborate within interdisciplinary teams to design, optimize, and maintain mechanical systems
  • Write, negotiate, and manage construction contracts with subcontractors across multiple disciplines through contract close-out
  • Oversee equipment installation, operation, and maintenance to meet specified parameters
  • Troubleshoot mechanical system problems, create maintenance protocols, service schedules, and coordinate material procurement for machinery upkeep
  • Provide mechanical engineering support to facility technicians to troubleshoot existing electrical equipment and controllers


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS



  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline
  • 1+ year of professional experience designing industrial compressed air, HVAC, and/or plumbing systems


PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:



  • Master's degree in an engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of professional experience designing and maintaining industrial compressed air, HVAC, and plumbing systems
  • Demonstrated ability to assist technicians with troubleshooting and repair efforts effectively
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD/Revit software applications at a beginner to intermediate skill level
  • Knowledgeable about relevant industry codes and standards, such as ASHRAE, NFPA, and International Building Code
  • Previous experience in system design, sizing, specification, and installation, particularly focusing on air compressors and on HVAC chillers, pumps, boilers, air handlers, and HEPA filtration systems
  • Thorough understanding of industrial compressed air systems
  • Experience with advanced data/monitoring systems
  • Strong understanding of construction project management principles, including scheduling, budgeting, and contractor management


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:



  • Willing to work extended hours and/or weekends as needed


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:
Mechanical Systems Engineer/Level I: $95,000.00 - $115,000.00/per year
Mechanical Systems Engineer/Level II: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00/per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You may also accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and will be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays per year. Exempt employees are eligible for 5 days of sick leave per year.
