About the role
We are looking for a creative and forward-thinking professional to lead our Individual Giving program with a best-in-class approach. In this role, you will refine our current strategies and introduce new ones to enhance the program's effectiveness. The ideal candidate will not only bring original ideas but also connect the dots with existing efforts, leveraging their experience to craft cohesive and actionable plans that set new standards of excellence.
The Director of Individual Giving works closely with the Museum's Director, President, Chief Development Officer, and the Board of Trustees to grow the museum's individual donor base and secure significant contributions. This role requires a dynamic individual with a passion for the museum's mission, exceptional relationship-building skills, and a proven track record in fundraising.
Responsibilities


  • Create and execute a comprehensive plan for individual giving to meet and exceed revenue targets and support the museum's mission.
  • Oversee and direct the Major Gifts and Patron Group programs with direction toward holistic donor asks including planned gifts, endowment support and future capital requests
  • Build and maintain relationships with a portfolio of major and prospective donors through personalized engagement and stewardship.
  • Assess and identify potential for donor engagement across major gifts, annual giving, and planned giving.
  • Design and implement effective strategies for donor recognition and retention, including events and communications.
  • Attend museum events and public engagements to promote the museum's mission and build relationships.
  • Partner with the Director of Development Operations to establish annual fundraising goals and monitor team progress.
  • Manage and motivate the Individual Giving team, support their professional development, and ensure they meet their goals.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development Operations to ensure effective moves management and prospect research.
  • Oversee the development of high-quality briefing materials and proposals for the Director, President, Chief Development Officer, and Trustees.
  • Ensure the team effectively uses and maintains the database, applying best practices for data-driven decision-making.
  • Guide the team in working with museum staff (curators, educators, conservators) to support their involvement in development efforts.


Qualifications


  • 10 or more years in progressively responsible roles in fundraising
  • Demonstrated experience working across a majority of key areas within Individual Giving, including patron programs, planned giving, annual giving, and major gifts
  • Direct experience soliciting gifts, with a preference for Major Gifts
  • Familiarity with the philanthropic landscape of New York City
  • Expertise in goal-setting and regular reprojection work to assist in the financial health of the institution
  • Proven record of mentoring staff and collaborating across departments in a large institution
  • Strong background in developing verbal and written donor communications
  • Ability to evaluate program effectiveness and to implement changes
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Superior interpersonal skills and the ability to nurture strong and enduring relationships
  • Demonstrates exceptional management skills and excels in collaborating effectively with museum colleagues.
  • Experience working with customer relationship management software, such as Tessitura, to track goals, team accountability and donor stewardship
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the Brooklyn Museum's mission, history, and programs, and a strong affinity with Brooklyn
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with an eagerness to have impact

Position type: Full-time
Salary: $132,375.60
Union status: Non-Union
FLSA status: Exempt
Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm. This position is subject to occasional overtime and weekend hours.
