Summary:

Goldbelt C6 is looking for a Senior Scientist III to support toxicology and hazard evaluations by collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and reporting data needed to characterize public health risks and evaluate risk management options related to food safety and nutrition. Assignments will have a focus on the application of knowledge on chemical contaminants, microbial pathogens, or nutritional exposure assessments from foods for issues regarding maternal and infant health and produce safety and related plans.


Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assisting in collecting toxicity and other relevant data related to hazards associated with contaminants and/or natural toxicants present in food to inform scientific assessments
  • Assisting in collecting data as part of systematic reviews and hazard evaluations for hazards associated with contaminants and/or natural toxicants present in food
  • Assist in the planning and conducting of quality control on data
  • Evaluating data and studies in laboratory animals, human epidemiological studies, and other sources
  • Analyzing and interpreting data using appropriate techniques and sound scientific principles
  • Assist in identifying data gaps and determining solutions for addressing these gaps
  • Assist in preparing human health assessments and other scientific and technical assessments that consider hazard identification and dose response relationships based on animal, human, and/or other data
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams and people to integrate solutions
  • Review scientific and technical reports prepared by others

Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Mastery of dietary exposure estimation and nutrition sciences
  • Expertise in the methodology used to develop data on food consumption (e.g., NHANES/WWEIA, NET), food availability (e.g., FAOSTAT, GEMS/Food), and food sales (e.g., FPED, FPID)
  • Knowledge of the benefits and limitations of data available "recipe" databases and related databases (e.g., FPED, FPID) for foods reported in NHANES/WWEIA and data availability and sales, in the U.S. and internationally
  • Ability to evaluate different approaches for developing "recipe" data
  • Experience with planning and executing exposure assessments using contaminant concentration data, "recipes" data, and NHANES/WWEIA consumption data
  • Must possess proficient computer skills to be able to use statistical and dietary exposure software (FARE) for estimating intakes and exposures
  • Ability to create data tables in Microsoft Access (or SAS, Stata, or R) and queries to summarize nutrient/contaminant concentrations, to estimate food intakes, and to estimate exposures
  • Knowledge and ability to evaluate the general methodology used for sampling and the analysis of foods to determine nutrient and contaminant concentrations and to evaluate the analytical data on nutrient and contaminant concentrations in foods
  • Must have experience working with and extracting data from sampling, consumption, and epidemiological databases (such as FDA FACTS, CDC's NHANES, TDS, and FOODNET) for use in risk assessment.
  • Skill in planning and organizing work on multiple projects and competing deadlines, and in planning, organizing, and directing scientific studies and related activities.
  • Skills in preparing reports and clearly presenting results and conclusions as well as the ability to articulate scientific data and results to non-scientific staff
  • Excellent communication of scientific analyses or findings, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education Level - Masters to Ph.D. (5+ years' experience) Degree: public health, food technology, biology, or a related discipline or field of biological or physical science.

The hourly range for this role will be $70.00 - $85.00 per hour.
