Description

The incumbent in this position will provide nursing support to the Hospitalist Service in the SIU-SOM Department of Internal Medicine, and will provide supervisory oversight for the Hospitalist nursing staff.

Sign-On Bonus: Now offering a $10,000 sign-on bonus with a 2-year employment commitment for candidates identified for hire before December 31st, 2024.


Examples of Duties

Direct Patient Care 40%

  1. Provide patient education in anticipation of discharge.

  1. Provide telephone triage for all incoming calls from patients, pharmacies and other healthcare agencies regarding care of discharged patients.

  1. Accompany attending physicians on in-patient rounds to ensure familiarity with and to participate in the patient's care and treatment.

  1. Place follow-up calls to patients after discharge to confirm status, reconcile medications, etc.

  1. Communicates with referring PCP's to ensure patient follow up.

  1. Communicate pertinent information to the supervising physician on the Hospitalist service.

  1. Identify discharge planning needs and make appropriate referrals to hospital staff for resolution.


  1. Provide patient and/or family discharge instructions including, but not limited to, convalescent activities and diet.

  1. Record actions taken in the hospital progress notes with appropriate sign-off by supervising physician.

  1. Record orders of supervising physician in record with appropriate sign-off.

Administrative 20%
  1. Acts as the head nurse for the Hospitalist Service at MMC.

  1. Coordinates and makes decisions relative to recruitment/selection of nursing staff for the service, with input from the Chief of General Internal Medicine.

  1. Approves/denies absence requests for nursing staff, considering work load issues and other scheduled absences.

  1. Performs probationary and annual performance evaluations for nursing staff.

  1. If necessary, coordinates with HR to determine disciplinary action, coaching, etc.

  1. Provides regular feedback to nursing staff re: their performance, in addition to the scheduled performance evaluations.

  1. Provides input into problem resolution regarding daily operational requirements of the Hospitalist Service.

  1. Provides supervisory liaison support and problem mitigation as required to assist the Chief, GIM and ensure smooth daily operations of the service.

  1. Maintains medical knowledge and personal communication skills sufficient to provide immediate oral instruction and management facilitation of first-line Hospitalist nurses to ensure SIU School of Medicine policies and procedures are properly dispatched.

  1. Provides oversight correction and mitigation of problem sometimes resulting from human error of staff, i.e., misunderstanding between nurses and patients/residents/hospital staff, incorrect/deficient charting, etc.

  1. Assists in development of and coordinates/oversees orientation program for new nursing staff.

Teaching/Education 25%
  1. Provide monthly orientation for interns and medical students to the in-patient service.

  1. Provide annual orientation for interns and residents relative to the American healthcare system including, but not limited to, social services, team communications, appropriate referrals for therapies and general introduction to community resources.

  1. Oversee and continually monitor interns' progress in the discharge process.

  1. Provide feedback relative to interns' progress in meeting established goals.

Service 15%
  1. Participate on quality improvement team internal to the Hospitalist service.

  1. Participate on quality improvement committees in the Department of Internal Medicine

  1. Participate on hospital committees as requested or assigned, including the Quality Improvement Committee.

  1. Assist in the collection and analysis of data for EIP and quality improvement projects.

Qualifications

REDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER

  1. Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois.
  2. Three years of work experience as a Registered Professional Nurse or 2 years work experience as a Registered Professional Nurse with 1 year of supervisory experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

  1. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  2. Ability to work with others as a member of multiple disciplinary team.
  3. Problem solving abilities.

  5. Excellent customer service skills.
  6. Ability to function without direct supervision.
