Description

The Director of Environmental Affairs position serves as the subject-matter expert in environmental standards and operations providing information and advisory services based on evidenced-based literature, compliance regulations, data analysis and leading practices for environmental affairs administration to OCM partner and stakeholder organizations. The Environmental Affairs Director is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects related to environmental sustainability and compliance within our partner organizations and facilities. This position plays a crucial role in developing and implementing strategies to minimize the environmental impact of partner organization's operations and ensuring compliance with relevant environmental regulations. The Environmental Affairs Director works closely with various inter-disciplinary teams to promote environmentally sustainable practices and foster a culture of environmental responsibility.


Examples of Duties

I. Administration: 90%
A. Serves as the principal administrator and champion of the Environmental Affairs Section of the SIU School of Medicine's (SIU SOM) Office of Correctional Medicine (OCM) with responsibility for the oversight, planning, organizing, managing, evaluating, and enhancing partner and stakeholder environmental affairs, processes, functions and program development. Provides subject matter expertise in the field of environmental operations and standards to OCM leadership, partners and stakeholders.
B. Researches, develops, recommends and implements environmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
C. Develops standard operating procedures, policies and procedures for conducting regular environmental audits and assessments to identify areas of improvement and recommend appropriate actions.
D. Stay updated on changes in environmental regulations and ensure organizational compliance with all applicable laws.
E. Design and implement environmental training programs to educate partners, stakeholders and employees on best practices for sustainability and environmental responsibility.
F. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate sustainable practices into the partner and OCM organization's operations, products, and services.
G. Monitor and analyze environmental performance metrics to track progress towards sustainability goals and identify areas for improvement.
H. Develop and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, such as regulatory agencies, environmental organizations, and community groups, to stay informed about emerging trends and collaborate on environmental initiatives.
I. Coordinate the development of environmental reports and permits required by regulatory agencies.
J. Conduct environmental risk assessments and develop strategies to mitigate potential risks.
K. Lead sustainability initiatives, such as energy conservation, waste reduction, and water management, by setting goals and implementing strategies to achieve them.
L. Summarizes and evaluates environmental risk and safety activities in the correctional health clinics and settings and compiles comprehensive reports and recommendations of the results of such reviews of environmental affairs records, adverse events, grievances, complaints and lawsuits. Recommends policies, procedures, processes, guidelines, and standards and progress with their implementation and measurement of improvement. Advises on necessary corrective actions needed to improve employee and patient safety. Conducts practical assessments of the environmental affairs for partners and stakeholders.
M. Serves as an environmental affairs expert to staff, vendors and non-medical facilities that work both inside and outside of the organization and utilizes environmental sciences and quality management knowledge to participate in review, audit, performance improvement and e services and administration design, including mortality. Assists in development of an approach to incorporate environmental services quality, patient safety, performance improvement, and risk management into correctional environmental affairs programming. Designs and develops clinical and analytical capabilities and instruments that will support comprehensive quality management and patient safety programming within correctional health care teams, working closely with OCM leadership and clinical resources as well as with key regional stakeholders.
N. Assures continual assessment of space, staff and resource requirements to maintain the highest quality of environmental safety; develops long-term facilities planning that places environmental sciences as an integral part of patient care; ensures that information systems and technology used in patient care environments maximize safety, effectiveness, and efficiency; actively develops programs and processes to connect and integrate environmental science enterprises; consults on physical environments and job structures to assure that the design will promote employee safety; recommend the proper tools to accomplish the mission of high-quality patient care.
O. Utilizes accepted leading practices, standards and benchmark comparisons to develop strategic operating plans that will position environmental affairs programming for optimal value, efficiency and service excellence. Directs the development and implementation of evidence-based practice guidelines. Participates in orienting OCM and correctional staff members to policies and procedures related to environmental affairs and sciences and programs, administration and patient safety.
P. Assures compliance with regulatory agencies in the design and execution of environmental programs and operations. Oversees investigation and internal reporting of adverse events and serves as champion in efforts related to patient safety and industry standard environmental operations.
Q. Serves as supervisor of direct reports; assigns and reviews work; provides guidance and training; approves time off and reassigns staff to meet operating needs; counsels staff regarding work performance; recommends and imposes discipline; establishes objectives and prepares performance evaluations; determines staffing requirements. Manages Environmental Affairs staff to ensure that employees are complying with company policies and industry and best practice environmental standards when providing services on behalf of the OCM. Guides larger, cross-divisional teams outside of direct span of control within the correctional facility or facilities in which OCM provides correctional health care services. Mentors and develops a team of managers and/or directors, managing work allocation, systems training, performance evaluations, and the building of an effective and efficient team dynamic. Works with senior leadership to develop and implement corrective action plans resulting in required process changes and outcomes when aberrant trends are identified.
R. Demonstrates, by actions, commitment to the mission and the behavioral standards of SIU School of Medicine. Provides excellent service to both internal and external customers through collaboration and partnership; compassion and respect; integrity and accountability; diversity and inclusion; as well as continuous learning and improvement.
S. Consistently supports compliance by maintaining privacy/confidentiality of information, displaying ethics and integrity, reporting non-compliance and adhering to applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and license requirements (if applicable) and to current IDOC and SIU School of Medicine policies and procedures. Maintain a HIPPA compliant environment for patients.
T. Participates in meetings, training and other environmental, health and safety activities as required by SIU School of Medicine.
II. Research: 5%
A. Utilizes medical knowledge to participate in appropriate environmental affairs and safety operations training; provides advice and consultation to staff, partners and stakeholders.
B. Publish research or Correctional Medicine business or clinic model findings in peer reviewed journals and other suitable media.
C. Present research at local, regional, national or international platforms.
III. Teaching: 5%
A. Utilizes environmental affairs and science knowledge to teach residents, students and partners.
B. Participates in education conferences, seminars, and lectures for resident physicians and medical students.
C. Educate physicians and other health care providers on systems, structure, processes and outcomes that are necessary for assurance of regulatory compliance related to correctional health dentistry and quality management activities.
IV. Service: 0%


Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Applied Science or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
2. Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental affairs, sustainability, or related field.
3. In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations and standards.
4. Experience in developing and implementing environmental policies and procedures.
5. Professional certifications or course completion in environmental management, such as OSHA 10 or 30-hour, Certified Environmental Professional (CEP), Certified Safety Practitioner (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
