Position Highlights

Research, Innovation & Impact (RII) Core Facilities at the University of Arizona is in search of a Cores Operations Manager. The general scope of this position in will be distributed across the three general categories of Core Facility operation, finance/budgeting, and strategic planning. The RII Cores Operations Coordinator will work in conjunction with the Operations Director to help oversee the day-to-day activity of the entire Core Facilities portfolio with a particular focus on continued standardization and centralization of cores management and oversight, fiscal responsibility and sustainability, and strategic planning.

This position will also work to further the larger mission of fostering collaborative research both within the University research community as well as outside academic institutions and industry partners. One of the primary foci of this position will be to provide audience and support in crafting the strategic vision and technology evaluation for the cores to remain a leader in supporting and facilitating cutting edge research.

The University of Arizona is home to a host of research resources called core facilities or cores-highly specialized testing facilities available for use by faculty, students, and scientists in government and industry. These RII core facilities provide users with access not only to the latest instrumentation but also to experienced staff with expertise in designing and conducting experiments and analyzing data.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties & responsibilities:

* Oversee day to day operations of Core Facilities, including managing and mentoring staff.

* Collaborates with Cores Director, RII business office, and Core Facilities Directors to develop and implement sound and strategic budgeting plans and allocations.

* Maintain records of productivity, goals, and metrics for UA Core Facilities, and assisting in development of strategic planning, including budgeting duties, personnel decisions, and allocation of resources.

* Collaborates with Faculty Research Advisory Committees (FRACs) and others in the UA community to sustain needed services, develop new services, evaluate emerging technologies, and contribute to shared instrumentation grants.

* Identify and assist in the submission of internal and external equipment funding mechanisms including federal, state, and university funding opportunities.

* Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, skills & abilities:

* Ability to communicate effectively with different groups/individuals.

* Familiarity with laboratory equipment, safety, best practices.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required and a minimum of 5 years of related work experience, including 2 years of managerial experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • MS degree
  • Lab experience
  • Business development experience
  • Experience in technology evaluation
  • Experience in running large scale operations including oversight of operational and budgetary elements
