Position Highlights The Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Arizona invites applications for a Receiving Technician. This position is in receiving. The AzVDL responds to outbreaks as part of the NAHLN, state of Arizona or APHIS. This position will be a vital part of processing samples for clinical and Federal or State regulated and diagnostic testing. AzVDL is looking for a person who would work well as part of our diagnostic service driven team.

The Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (AzVDL) is committed to excellence in diagnostic service and animal disease surveillance provided to the veterinary community of Arizona. This involves emergency response on the part of the AzVDL.

In 2002 the AzVDL was one of the first laboratories to be approved as a Participant Laboratory of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) to conduct testing in support of APHIS and the National Veterinary Service Laboratory.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities:

The position requires adaptability and a collaborative mindset. Every sample that flows in or out of the laboratory goes through Receiving/Specimen Processing. We are looking for an individual who will promote positive communication that will enhance teamwork. The ideal candidate will:

* Demonstrate the ability to perform detailed work; work with frequent interruptions, multi-task and problem solving

* Able to communicate effectively with different groups/individuals

* Processes samples by receiving, entering, storing and distributing specimens.

* Performs routine technical and clerical functions including data entry, labeling and photocopying

* Answer phones and handle routine calls

* Manages and prepares packages for shipping

* The receiving laboratory evaluates submissions and determines appropriate entries into LIMS.

* Ability to take direction and assimilate instructions

* Complies with procedures for handling biological and other specimens with appropriate biosafety, chemical safety and biosecurity

* Follows standard operating procedures and quality assurance procedures for proper laboratory security, credibility, and data/sample integrity

* Maintains inventory of the specimen login area laboratory freezers and refrigerators.

* Disposes of specimens as required

* Conforms with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements related to their area of responsibility

* This position may include periodic late hours and weekend hours

* Additional duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Strong computer and database skills

Physical & Environmental Requirements

* Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach and stretch frequently

* Use material handling equipment to push and/or pull up to 75 pounds and required to lift, push and/or pull up to 25 pounds

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience and a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience required.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a clinical diagnostic laboratory.
  • Experience working with standard operating procedures.
