Job Description

The Charge Nurse is responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities of the unit on an assigned shift and is responsible and accountable for directing and facilitating the flow of patient care activities of the department/area. This position manages individualized, goal-directed nursing care through use of the nursing process and the principles of primary nursing in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures. This position is responsible for the delivery of quality care in designated surgical services area while meeting standards as set forth by the State, regulatory agency and facility policies and procedures. This position promotes teamwork with all surgical team members and other departments. This position manages supplies and equipment effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all responsibilities/duties required by surgical services as defined in the scope of service to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed.
  • Assumes responsibility for daily personnel assignment/monitoring patient care and overall unit activities, in accordance with established standards.
  • Assesses and diagnoses patient and family needs in order to provide quality care to assigned patients.
  • Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to implement medical plan of care, nursing interventions and procedures as necessary for the care of the patient.
  • Evaluates the identified problems, care provided and patient's responses are reassessed to meet patient and family needs to ensure overall quality of care delivered.
  • Maintains up to date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to ensure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team, to ensure quality care.
  • Directs other licensed and non-licensed personnel in the provision of care to patients as assigned.
  • Maintains current knowledge/certification/licensure.
  • Supports Professional Governance through engagement and support of the Unit Based Council and other nursing councils.
  • Assist in other duties as assigned to support the operational needs of the department and organization.
  • May be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.


Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • Associates Degree Nursing or Technical Diploma/Certificate Nursing Required. Bachelor's Degree Nursing Preferred.

Minimum Work Experience

  • 2 years Clinical nursing experience in a surgical services area Required

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Nurse Licensed State of Florida or eligible compact state license Upon Hire Required
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS) American Heart Association Upon Hire Required
  • ACLS Provider (ACLS) American Heart Association within 90 Days Required
  • National Institutes Of Health Stroke Scale (NIH) within 90 Days Required

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Demonstrated proficiency in critical care nursing, knowledge and skills. (High proficiency)
  • Capable of adapting to a changing environment, including emergency situations.
  • Organizational skills are essential due to the changing status of the patient and the environment.
  • Possesses effective organizational, decision and problem solving skills in own practice and when supervising others.
  • Must be able to return to the hospital/facility within 30 minutes of a Callback.
