Communications Specialist

Position Summary:

Reporting to the head of strategic communications, the communications specialist will leverage exceptional social media and communications practices to share accurate and essential information about the Society with diverse audiences, including scientists, staff, the public, media, event attendees, and more. This role will support social media management, digital communications, public and media relations, and other strategic communications activities as needed.

APS has a "remote first" concept that promotes equal treatment and equal access within the United States, independent of physical work location, with a majority of staff working primarily from remote work locations. Responsibilities:

Social media management:




  • Manage business accounts on Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, WeChat, and other platforms in accordance with industry standards.



  • Assist with the design, execution, and continuous improvement of a social media strategy.



  • Maintain an editorial calendar to ensure consistent messaging and timely content delivery.



  • Create and publish quality content across APS' social media platforms that encourages engagement and supports organizational goals.



  • Monitor social media channels for risks to the brand and opportunities to capitalize on popular trends and breaking news.



  • Foster community growth through timely responses and proactive engagement.



  • Identify, monitor, evaluate, and report on key performance indicators to guide communications strategies and priorities.




Internal communications:




  • Collaborate to manage the internal communications program in accordance with industry standards.



  • Assist with the design, execution, and continuous improvement of an internal communications strategy.



  • Maintain internal communications tools and technologies, including Slack, Interactions (intranet), and Mailchimp.



  • Produce, review, edit, and/or publish quality content, including blog posts, emails, instant messages, web copy, presentations, talking points, and digital signage, that fosters an informed and engaged workforce and builds a positive workplace culture.



  • Coordinate and promote organization-wide meetings, events, and other activities.



  • Assist in developing and distributing timely and transparent internal communications during emergencies or sensitive situations.



  • Identify, monitor, evaluate, and report on key performance indicators to guide internal communications strategies and priorities.




Public and media relations:




  • Support media outreach efforts, including monitoring media coverage and drafting press materials.



  • Contribute to event planning and coordination as needed.



  • Assist in content creation and distribution for external audiences as needed.



  • Identify, monitor, evaluate, and report on key performance indicators to guide public and media relations strategies and priorities.




Digital communications:




  • Assist in planning and content creation for the web and email.



  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure alignment of messaging across digital platforms.



  • Contribute to APS events by managing live coverage and other digital content as needed.



  • Identify, monitor, evaluate, and report on key performance indicators to guide digital communications strategies and priorities.



  • Other duties as assigned.




On-site event support:




  • Attend APS events on an as-needed basis for communications support.




Education:



  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, communications, journalism, or a related field. Directly relevant work experience in lieu of a degree accepted.





Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum of three years of communications or marketing experience, preferably at an academic institution, scientific publisher, or nonprofit organization.
  • Experience managing social media accounts for a brand.
  • Impeccable writing, editing, and presentation skills, with the ability to appeal to different audiences.
  • Creative and strategic thinker with exceptional project management and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and relationship-building abilities.
  • Proficient with communications tools like Sprout Social, Jostle, Slack, and Muck Rack.
  • Fluent in AP style.
  • Background in science and/or physics is a plus.


Travel: The position requires up to 25% of travel for in-person meetings with staff as well as periodic travel to attend meetings and events as part of its core responsibilities, as well as additional travel as assigned.

Salary:

The salary range for this position takes into account various factors influencing compensation decisions, such as skill sets, experience, training, and other business and organizational requirements. The salary listed within the specified ranges considers relevant experience. Our compensation philosophy at APS aims to maintain salaries at the midpoint of the market. As a result, we typically hire within the target starting range. Exceptional, rare cases may merit reviews above target starting range for specialized or niche skills aligned with strategic operational goals.

Hiring Range: $61,987/year - $84,456/year (USD)

Target Starting Range: $61,987/year - $68,959/year (USD)

Work Environment:

As noted above, APS offers a "Remote First" workplace. Although our Editorial Offices are located on Long Island, you can work from other places in the United States. We are flexible about work hours, but expect responsiveness during the core of the workday, Eastern Time.
