Job Description:

Provides basic indirect patient care as delegated by the Registered Nurse by running errands; providing clean, well stocked surgical suite; transporting patients; and answering calls for assistance. Provides both direct and indirect patient care delegated by the Registered Nurse or supervisor, including cleaning, stocking, and safe patient transport.

Assists in the delivery of patient care. This includes performing personal care such as feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, moving and transporting patients, or changing linens. Collects and documents vital signs and other observations of patients. Accountable for performing phlebotomy draws as delegated from the lab.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Takes direction from Registered Nurse or supervisor for direct and indirect patient care Cleaning/stocking, room turnover, transporting of patients. Obtains and delivers items as requested including equipment, instruments, specimens and other lab requests. Completes preoperative skin preparation according to department guidelines.
  • Participates in team communication and collaboration. Communicates ideas and opportunities for improvement. Serves as mentor and resource to new staff. Reports safety issues or concerns to supervisor.
  • Performs personal care/interventions as assigned. Completes interventions according to identified critical elements of each procedure. Answers patient call lights promptly for both assigned and other patients. Assists patient with grooming and hygiene needs, maintains skin integrity, personal comfort and population specific needs of the patient. Distributes and sets up water, snacks and patient trays and assists patients. Cleans up after service/activity/observation is completed. Provides assistance to the RN with basic treatments and procedures, which include but are not limited to PT/OT, Respiratory, empty tubes, and drains and removing foleys. Provides assistance to the RN for admission, transfer or discharge of patients. Performs hourly rounding. Collects and saves specimens. Perform phlebotomy draws according to hospital standards. Perform Lab tests, which could include blood glucose monitoring and Point of Care (POC) Urine Pregnancy Test. May transport medications excluding controlled substances within the site. May assist with room turnover which could include cleaning and restocking. May participate as a Runner which entails supporting the staff with obtaining and delivering equipment, instruments or specimens.
  • Observes, collects and documents health status data as assigned. Completes measurements according to critical elements of policy/procedures, which may include: temperatures, radial pulses, blood pressures, respirations, weights, intake and output. Reports immediately to the RN observations/health status data that are not within normal limits for the patient or are significantly changed. Documents according to documentation guidelines.
  • Contributes to an environment that is safe for patients, visitors and employees. Protects patient, self and others from injury during transfers, lifts and transports by using proper equipment and body mechanics. Reports environmental risks or equipment malfunctions to supervisor. Uses equipment following policies, procedures and manufacturer directions or standards. May handle hazardous waste (identifies, segregates, and disposes of hazardous waste; ensures container integrity; knows emergency response procedures to spills, fires, and evacuation procedures).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age with education and/or experience needed to meet required functional competencies as listed on the job description
  • Successful completion of a nursing assistant program or completion of one (1) semester of clinical rotations within an accredited nursing program

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 0 to 2 years experience in surgical setting

Licenses/Certifications

  • BLS Tier 1 - Basic Life Support - Allina Health required upon hire
