Summary of Job Duties:This posting will fill multiple positions.

Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician I/II/III/IV will assist and support the pharmacist in the day-to-day dispensing operation of patient care. The dispensing operation includes gathering the appropriate medication, researching data in the EPIC computer system, compounding medications, maintaining appropriate and adequate stock, and other duties related to dispensing medication to the patient. The Pharmacy Technician will prioritize work based on immediate need and rapidly changing workload. The Pharmacy Technician will work as a team member to efficiently, accurately perform day-to-day work along with any additional tasks or projects to help achieve departmental goals. Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Level I:

  • Pharmacy technician license through the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy or eligible for AR licensure.

Level II:

  • Two (2) years of pharmacy technician work experience

  • Pharmacy technician license through the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy or eligible for AR licensure.

  • Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board(PTCB)

Level III:

  • Three (3) years of work experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital or retail setting

  • Pharmacy Technician License through the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy or eligible for AR licensure.

  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) issued by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)

  • Computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Office and EMR experience)

Level IV:

  • Four(4) years of pharmacy technician experience or Bachelors Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences

  • ASHP/ACPE accredited technician training or certificate program

  • Pharmacy Technician License through the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy or eligible for AR licensure.

According to the UAMS Pharmacy Technician Career Ladder, a Pharmacy Technician II/III/IV may be assigned one of these specialized roles: automation, controlled substances, pharmacy buyer, investigational drugs, medication reconciliation, compounding specialist or WAM (retail) order entry, and may also support operations of the vaccine clinics.

Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Accurately picks and fills medication carts. Averages less than four errors daily while picking the medication carts.

  • Processes and expedites delivery of STAT/NOW orders as soon as possible using Dispense Tracking.

  • Uses hospital wide EPIC system to track medication dispensing to unit.

  • Packages Unit Dose medications accurately.

  • Understands and handles, "Hazardous Drugs" and follows all policies related to medication processing.

  • Monitors and processes Pyxis Stock Outs as soon as possible. Notifies a pharmacist when medications are ready for checking.

  • Fills crash cart trays using the Kitcheck system and restocks emergency boxes and trays.

  • Assist with pharmacy automation via Robot and Med Carousel.

  • Answers/Receives and prescreens phone calls. Demonstrates proper phone etiquette.

  • Manages Pyxis inventory, including accurate selection and refilling of medication. Loads and unloads medication and resolves discrepancies.

  • Understands how to operate all equipment (CII safe, Pyxis, load printers, fax machines, etc.).

  • Delivers medication carts accurately and promptly.

  • Delivers Pyxis accurately and promptly.

  • Maintains security of controlled substances.

  • Removes expired drugs from assigned areas monthly.

  • Maintains clean work surfaces, hoods, and classified spaces by using proper techniques and following policies and procedures.

  • Maintains neat and clean work surfaces in all dispensing areas.

  • Pulls and labels medications prior to dispensing.

  • Handles compounded products (tubing, delivering, etc.).

  • Contacts nurses with secure codes for compounded narcotic products.

  • Maintains adequate stock of pre-made and frozen IV products.

  • Rotates stock appropriately based on expiration dates.

  • Processes expired, damaged and recalled pharmacy products.

  • Responsible for the upkeep of sterile and non-sterile compounding areas.

  • Monitors and records temperature, humidity, and pressure logs.

  • Other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:
Medium Work | Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Visual Requirements: close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; and/or visual inspection at distances close to the eyes.
