Position Summary:
Under
the direction of the Senior Manager of Outreach, the Bilingual Outreach
Specialist will be responsible for helping the agency conduct public engagement
activities in Spanish and English, with a focus on engaging populations that
have been traditionally underrepresented in the transportation planning process,
including people with limited English proficiency. The top language spoken by
people in the NJTPA region, other than English, is Spanish. The Bilingual
Outreach Specialist assists with various public engagement initiatives,
including the Street Smart NJ pedestrian safety program, the UpNext North
Jersey young adult advisory group and the Outreach Liaison Program. The ideal
candidate is an advocate for including traditionally underrepresented
populations in the planning process, has a passion for elevating voices, and is
compassionate, professional and able to collaborate with various staff. This is
a hybrid position based in Newark, NJ with the option to work remotely part of
the time.
Essential Functions:
- Help plan and staff outreach events, including efforts focused on engaging traditionally underrepresented populations, especially Spanish-speaking populations.
- Give presentations in Spanish at outreach events.
- Work with staff in the Outreach and Communications & Public Affairs divisions to create social media content, publications, and videos to engage the public.
- Assist with translating materials into Spanish.
- Support the UpNext Young Adult Advisory Group and Outreach Liaison Program, including helping plan meetings, events, and recruitment efforts.
- Assist with promoting the Street Smart NJ pedestrian safety program and support communities interested in participating.
Additional Functions:
- Work with staff in other divisions to identify and highlight relevant data and findings of technically oriented studies and planning efforts and assist with outreach efforts for Subregional Studies, Local Concept Development Studies and additional public engagement activities conducted by other divisions.
- Assist with NJTPA Board and Committee meeting preparations, as needed.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited college with a bachelor's degree in public policy, communication, planning or a related field.
- Translation certification or equivalent.
- One to three years of relevant experience in communications, public policy, planning or related field.
- Bilingual Spanish/English fluency, (written and oral).
- Strong writing skills.
- At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience creating social media content.
- Experience editing reports and publications.
- Demonstrated project management and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of government, development, planning, transportation, and urban affairs.
- Commitment to advancing inclusion of underrepresented populations.
