Compensation Grade: P12Compensation Details: Minimum: $45,849.00 - Maximum: $45,849.00 AnnuallyDepartment (OPH) WADS - Wadsworth CenterJob Description: Responsibilities The Senior Laboratory Technician (SLT) will assist with research projects using a wide range of molecular biology and biochemical experiments, help record and archive data arising from those experiments, and contribute to general laboratory maintenance. The SLT will help support multiple projects incorporating molecular genetics (especially bacterial culture, cloning, DNA preparation, and library preparation for next-generation sequencing), protein biochemistry (including protein purification and immunoblotting), and bacterial cell biology (including live cell labeling for fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry).The incumbent will join an exciting new research team focused on discovering how Staphylococcus aureus cells spatially organize their growth to produce Staph's characteristic "cluster of grapes" morphology, an elegant but poorly-understood process that is essential for Staph's antibiotic resistance and survival in the host. The incumbent will assist and support an interdisciplinary group that combines microbial genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, and fluorescence microscopy to understand the fundamentals of how bacteria coordinate their growth. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting to perform a broad range of duties, including maintaining stocks of bacteria, keeping detailed and accurate records, operating laboratory equipment, assisting with preparing samples for experiments, and other appropriate related duties. This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center's mission in the New York State Department of Health's efforts to protect and promote the health of New York's citizens. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in microbiology, molecular biology or a related field; OR an Associate's degree in a related field and two years of experience in a laboratory or clinical setting; OR four years of such experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in a molecular biology or microbiology research laboratory. Experience with molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, gel electrophoresis, plasmid purification, DNA isolation, plasmid cloning), and/or genetic manipulation of bacteria. Experience with microscopy, cell biology, next generation sequencing, statistics analysis, and image analysis. Conditions of Employment Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required. Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting will not be available.
