Job Summary

Dr. Keisa Mathis is seeking an experienced Lab Manager to lead projects in hypertension and lupus research. We are researching a disease called lupus, which involves inflammation and often leads to high blood pressure, to understand how this inflammation can make blood pressure go up over time. Currently, we are studying mice with lupus to see how problems in the way the nervous system and immune system talk to each other might cause inflammation and high blood pressure. The goal of this research is to find important information that can help us understand and treat both high blood pressure and lupus.

This position will be expected to manage and direct the daily operational activities of the lab. This candidate will manage staff by being responsible for performance appraisals, guiding development through coaching and training, employee relations, etc. This role will effectively provide for the smooth operations of the lab such as quality control, ordering and allocating lab supplies and materials, creation and revisions of laboratory policy and procedures, and safety requirements for biohazards and chemicals, as well as adhering to state and federal rules and regulations for laboratories.


Experience and Education

  • Bachelors degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related scientific field, and four (4) years of relevant experience, to include at least one (1) year experience in specific area assigned.
  • Some supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must meet education and experience certification and training guidelines for equipment and tests used and performed in laboratory, as required under federal regulations.


Job Duties

  • Coordinates duties, schedules, project activities, equipment usage, operating time, research studies, billing, and space for large group of people ensuring efficient operation of lab.
  • Coordinates availability of technical assistance, appropriate chemicals, and special equipment to ensure timely preparation or completion of clinical work or research projects.
  • Supervises laboratory and office personnel, maintains personnel records, completes performance evaluations, and recruits and trains both clerical and technical support using managerial skills according to departmental and university guidelines.
  • Orders and allocates all laboratory supplies, materials, and equipment; maintains adequate inventory to ensure efficient operation of projects.
  • Maintains information on warranties, service contracts, operating manuals, licenses and permits; oversees maintenance of laboratory equipment in order to ensure compliance with all regulations and safety standards.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and presents research data using computers and subledgers for submission to investigators to be used in preparation of journal articles for publication.
  • Prepares journal articles and writes protocols for research as required by organizing and editing data. Troubleshoots problems and designs training according to government regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
