Job Summary

The Commitment Accountant performs professional level accounting and administrative work that includes accurate allocation and accounting of payroll expenditures, maintaining the integrity of payroll-related records, and providing essential payroll-related support, and is involved in the daily organization and operation of the University's accounting and budgeting systems. The role independently prepares and posts journal entries, conducts account reconciliations, manages employer costs, prepares detailed financial reports, and complies with regulatory agencies. The Commitment Accountant's work will be reviewed through normal accounting procedures and audits. This role will also handle filings and recommend system modifications to enhance the accounting processes for payroll.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$60,000 - $75,000 annual, combined with an excellent benefits package


Required Qualifications

1. A. Bachelor's degree with a major in Accountancy or a related field AND three (3) years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) professional level accounting experience.
OR
B. Possession of current registration as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant, or a valid license to practice Public Accounting (LPA) AND one (1) year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) professional level accounting experience.
OR
C. Master's degree in Accountancy or a related field AND one (1) year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) professional level accounting experience.


Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience preparing and maintaining accurate records and using pertinent software applications.
2. Knowledge to perform advanced math skills, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: principles and techniques involved in payroll preparation, monitoring and control; payroll related accounting practices; labor contracts and their impact on payroll; and other applicable State and Federal laws.
3. Ability to lead and participate in a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job- related equipment.
4. Flexibility to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances. Ability to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups.
5. Experience in analyzing data using defined but different processes and operating office equipment using defined methods. Problem solving and ability to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines.
6. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; and working as part of a team with detailed information/data and frequent interruptions.


Work Hours

Core work hours: Monday - Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview. The active register for this classification will be voided when the position is filled.
