Who we are looking for:

ASCO is in search of a high-performing and talented Associate Director, Oncology News to oversee editorial processes and quality for the ASCO Daily News program, including the planning, development, and dissemination of oncology content covering ASCO meetings and journals.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee content development and dissemination for ASCO Daily News print and digital offerings, including the publication website, podcast and video programs, and email newsletters
  • Serve as staff liaison for the ASCO Daily News Editorial Board and co-liaison for the Meeting and Member Publications Editorial Board
  • Direct the selection, development, and review of oncology news coverage, which includes coverage for ASCO meetings and journals and physician-written commentary and analysis. Uphold strict editorial standards to ensure accurate and independent news coverage
  • Collaborate with internal staff to ensure efficient, effective workflows and processes, including the creation of production schedules; physician-level content review; copy editing by freelance editors and vendors; and timely print and online publication
  • Provide supervision, mentoring, feedback, coaching and task delegation to departmental staff to maximize their effectiveness and support each staff member's professional development
  • Manage the hiring of freelance writers and editors for the ASCO Daily News and collaborate on the management of workflow/production vendors
  • Oversee live meeting coverage, including but not limited to 6 weekends a year
  • Work with department leadership to plan and execute strategy around content development and dissemination and direct the implementation of new ASCO Daily News products and multimedia options
  • Initiate and execute process improvement, obstacle anticipation and avoidance, and innovative advancements and improvements to products

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Digital Media Studies, Communications, English, Literature or related field or equivalent years of experience
  • 8 years of news management experience in a clinical/medical setting
  • 4 years of management experience
  • Experience working in a collaborative team environment with physicians, executives, contractors, and other staff
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and an openness to embracing and learning new technology
  • Ability to work occasional weekends as needed to support ASCO meetings and symposia

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience in the medical field or knowledge of the oncology field is highly desired
  • Master's degree in Journalism, Digital Media Studies, Communications, English, Literature or related field
  • Experience working with project management software (e.g., Airtable, Smartsheet)

  • Superior communication skills, including writing and editorial skills such as editing and proofreading
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and project management/planning skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple complex stakeholders and projects within budget and timelines
  • Experience leading critical functional or cross-functional initiatives
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with external experts, editors, and all professional levels
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and present scientific and clinical data and understand statistical methods and analysis plans
  • Strong leadership and managerial/supervisory skills with the ability to delegate, motivate and develop staff
  • Ability to determine goals and priorities and to assess the actions, time and resources needed to achieve those goals

ADA/Physical Requirements

Fast-paced office environment with extended periods seated or standing at a desk.

High use of computer and other office technology equipment.

Travel

Up to 12-15 days a year
