DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The UC Santa Cruz Arboretum and Botanic Garden https://arboretum.ucsc.edu/ is a unit within the Division of Finance, Operations and Administration https://foa.ucsc.edu/. Our division includes a broad and diverse set of operational units whose team members work daily to support the core mission of UC Santa Cruz to advance excellence in teaching, research, and service. The Arboretum reported to the Division of Academic Affairs through 2024, and will continue to closely collaborate with this division through its function as an academic support unit. The UC Santa Cruz Arboretum & Botanic Garden's 115 acres host a rich and diverse collection that contains representatives from more than 300 plant families from mostly Mediterranean climates. The garden maintains collections of rare and threatened plants as well as plants of scientific and horticultural interest. Particular specialties are world conifers and primitive angiosperms. The formal gardens include plants from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and California. Some of the species in these collections are not otherwise available for study in American botanical gardens and arboreta. More information can be found at: https://arboretum.ucsc.edu/ JOB SUMMARY Under the general direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Sustainability, the Executive Director provides leadership for the Arboretum & Botanic Garden at UC Santa Cruz. The Executive Director manages staff, budgets, philanthropic and capital development, collections, grounds, educational programs, and retail operations. The person in this role ensures compliance with campus policies and government regulations and provides vision for the collections and for the Arboretum as a whole. This position requires a leader with development experience, with demonstrated achievements in talent management and individual fundraising, and broad knowledge of the importance of integrating fundraising with communications, marketing, and community building. The incumbent will provide visionary leadership to the Arboretum & Botanic Garden to advance conversations around the intersections of native plant cultivation and conservation with the campus's, as well as regional, sustainability and climate action initiatives. The incumbent enables the Arboretum to advance community conversations and solutions to some of the most salient issues faced by our society, including climate change and biodiversity loss, and how native plant cultivation and conservation have a key role. The incumbent helps advance conversations about climate change, biodiversity loss, and land stewardship. The Arboretum & Botanic Garden collaborates closely with academic partners to advance cutting-edge research for dissemination to and application by the public - across campus, regionally, and globally. The incumbent is expected to model the UCSC Principles of Community in their interactions with senior leaders, faculty, students and staff at all levels of the organization, and in their interactions with agencies, organizations and individuals outside of the campus. APPOINTMENT INFORMATION Budgeted Salary: $133,100 - $155,000 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
