Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $2.1 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office.

N3B is a limited liability company owned by HII Nuclear Inc. and BWX Technologies, joined by our critical subcontractors Longenecker and Associates and Tech2 Solutions.

N3B brings operational discipline, proven approaches and predictable results to the Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract.

Position Location:

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position Summary

N3B is seeking a Security Specialist with excellent communication skills and a professional demeanor to join N3B's Safeguards and Security team.

The successful candidate will be a forward thinking professional with ability to interact well with management and personnel at all levels of the company. The security specialist will serve as the lead for coordinating the badging processes at N3B, externally interfacing with subcontractors, Triad, and other facilities within the DOE Complex, and with the DOE. The security specialist will prepare, maintain or update security procedures, and train other staff.

This position reports to the Safeguards & Security Director.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (may include, but are not limited to):

  • Knowledge and/or experience in the following areas; physical security, information security, and/or security program management.
  • Perform risk assessments so that appropriate countermeasures can be developed.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems at an institutional level.
  • Ability to interface with all levels of management as well as technical and nontechnical personnel.
  • Ability to prepare and present status of projects, process improvement recommendations, policies, practices, and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):

  • Professional knowledge and experience in the area of classified matter protection and control, information security, physical security or computer security.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of operations and security & safeguards requirements within a DOE contractor environment such as DOE O 471.1.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems at an institutional level.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and interfacing with all levels of management as well as technical and non-technical personnel to provide recommendations of appropriate and required security & safeguards measures, techniques, and methods to assure and improve the protection of personnel, activities and facilities.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement, intelligence, and/or public or private sector security organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present status of the Security environment, process improvement recommendations, policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Effective communication skills (i.e., ability to present ideas effectively in formal and informal situations and convey thoughts clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing).
  • Attention to detail and analytical skills, with the ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required:

Level 3: Bachelors' degree combined with 6 years' relative experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position's duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.

Level 4: Bachelors' degree combined with 10 years' relative experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position's duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.

Education Equivalency: 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college.

Business Associations:

Level 3: Represents the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.

Level 4: Serves as consultant to management and special external spokesperson for the organization on major matters pertaining to its policies, plans, and objectives.

Impact:

Level 3: Exerts some influence on the overall objectives and long-range goals of the organization. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve objectives would normally have a serious effect upon the administration of the organization.

Level 4: Effects of decisions are long-lasting and heavily influenced the future course of the organization. Errors in judgment or failure to achieve results would result in the expenditure of large amounts of company resources.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Normally assigned to perform work in an office environment. Only electrical hazards and other minor potential hazards normally found in an office environment are anticipated. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline. Office work environment.

Safety, Security, and Quality

While working to achieve N3B LLCC objectives, the Security Specialist will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner to include protecting the confidentiality and integrity of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This role will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security. Ability to obtain a Q level Department of Energy security clearance.
