Position description

Associate Specialist- Krogan Lab, UCSF

Your work will focus on mapping protein interactions and pathways involved in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and latency. This role is an excellent opportunity to learn several valuable, cutting-edge techniques in molecular biology, virology, CRISPR gene-editing as well as proteomics while working with a dynamic and interdisciplinary research team. You will learn and apply different cellular, molecular, and biochemical assays to validate these findings. The candidate will also have the opportunity to develop and implement new protocols for gene-editing and mass spectrometry-based proteomics experiments. Working as part of the infectious biology group in the Krogan lab, you will express affinity-tagged proteins of interest, perform affinity purifications, and proximity labeling of proteins and their interactors for mass spectrometry analysis to study protein-protein interactions. Additional major responsibilities will include the preparation, sequencing, and analysis of next-generation sequencing libraries to support CRISPR screening experiments. Further responsibilities will consist of isolation and culture of primary human immune cells, as well as functional analysis of engineered cells via Sanger sequencing and flow cytometry. The projects will also involve the purification of infectious HIV and infection of T cells with HIV in a biosafety level-3 facility. Strong organizational and communication skills are required. The Krogan Lab is a highly dynamic and collaborative laboratory focusing on molecular networks underpinning infectious disease, carcinogenesis, and neurological disorders. Our ideal applicant is a problem solver with a positive attitude, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to learn and implement methodology efficiently. Candidate's CV and/or cover letter must state basic qualifications (or if pending) upon submission. Candidates must meet all qualifications by the time of hire.

  • Experience in the essential molecular biology techniques of molecular cloning, PCR, and western blotting.
  • Experience in cell/tissue culture.
  • Able to work independently and meet deadlines; recognize and resolve problems while maintaining a high level of organization.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to interface with the team to review and analyze the results.
  • Willingness to work with infectious HIV virus in a BSL-3 facility.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience transfection or viral transduction.
  • Experience with affinity purifications of proteins.
  • Experience with CRISPR/gene editing techniques.
  • Experience with immunoprecipitation.
  • Experience in preparation of samples for mass spectrometric analysis.
  • Experience in fluorescence microscopy.
  • Experience with mass spectrometry data.
  • Experience with managing large datasets and/or databases.
  • Experience with statistical data analysis.
