Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
The Office of Strategic Communication focuses on high-level priorities that enhance Fayetteville State University's branding, recruitment initiatives, and fundraising. Our goal is to positively influence the public's awareness and understanding of the university and collaborate with campus partners to strengthen Fayetteville State University's visibility and brand to internal and external constituents.
Description of Work Continued:
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Staff Writer will be responsible for producing compelling written content that effectively communicates the university's messages, accomplishments, and opportunities to various audiences. This includes writing materials for the college website, newsroom, printed publications, and other channels. This position will enhance FSU's reputation and faculty and staff engagement through high-quality writing across multiple platforms and support student recruitment, retention, and university advancement efforts.

Writing and Editing
Write clear, engaging, and persuasive content for various university communications, including news articles for Bronco Pride, feature stories, press releases, website copy, direct mail, email, advertisements, one-pagers, social media posts, newsletters, flyers, and other marketing materials. Edit and proofread content to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to the university's brand guidelines.

Research and Fact-Finding
Stay informed about university news, events, and achievements to identify potential story opportunities. Conduct research and interviews to gather information for stories and articles.

Webpage Content and Maintenance
Contribute to the development and maintenance of the university website content as directed by the supervisor. Ensure all content adheres to accessibility standards and best practices for digital communications.

Collaboration
Support social media efforts by creating written content for various platforms as needed. Collaborate with communications and marketing staff to develop content strategies aligned with FSU's brand and messaging objectives. Assist in planning and executing communication campaigns for university events, initiatives, and programs as directed by supervisor. Other duties assigned by division/department leadership
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Knowledge skills and abilities:

  • Excellent writing, editing, fact-checking, and proofreading skills
  • Strong research and interviewing abilities
  • Proficiency in AP style
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices for digital content
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Demonstrated initiative and self-starter
  • Experience with multimedia storytelling (photography, video, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to write for diverse audiences and about complex topics
