Description

This position provides clinical support to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.




Examples of Duties

l. Direct Patient Care 45%

a. Assists in assigned clinics under direct supervision of Charge Nurse or Registered Nurse. Will work with faculty physicians, resident physicians and medical students as assigned.
b. Provides nursing assistance to clinic nurses, escorts patients to exam rooms, takes blood
pressure, temperature, weight and any other related data and records on patient chart. Prepares patient for exam and chaperones during exams.
c. Assists with minor surgical procedures.
d. Performs phlebotomy, including lab draws with a butterfly, vacutainer, and a syringe.
e. Collects and prepares lab specimens; performs waived lab testing such as urine dipsticks and pregnancy tests.
f. According to an order or protocol, after a competence check off, performs in clinic
procedures.
g. Writes and/or orders into the Electronic Health Record (EHR), following doctor's orders,
requisitions of laboratory tests and procedures, such as medicines, laboratory and radiology.
h. Assists attending physicians in the performance of gynecological examinations, pap smears, endometrial biopsy, catheterizations, removal of surgical sutures and staples, hysteroscopes, cystoscopies, and non-stress test.
i. Gives SQ or IM injections to patients as directed by the physician.
j. Performs other patient care duties assigned in a professional manner.

ll. Indirect Patient Care 30%

a. Assists with washing, wrapping and sterilizing instruments.
b. Assists with cleaning, stocking and setting up exam rooms and procedure rooms.
c. Answers phone calls coming into the clinic for physicians or other staff and notifies them per department guidelines.
d. Faxes written or pre-printed hospital orders. Inputs orders in the EHR as directed.
e. Assists with ordering clinical supplies on weekly/pm basis.
fo. Performs other indirect patient care duties assigned in a professional manner.

lll. Patient Service, Clinical Information, and Miscellaneous Responsibilities 25%

a. Requests medical records when appropriate for emergency appointments or telephone requests.
b. Retrieves laboratory and x-ray results or reports from the hospital or medical records department as requested by the physician.
c. Assists in the scanning of patient records into the EHR.
d. Performs other duties assigned in a professional manner as the initial clinical representative to all patients.


Qualifications

1) High School graduate or equivalent; AND

2) Possession of a current/valid medical assistant certification (CMA, American Association of Medical Assistants; NCMA, National Center for Competency Testing; CCMA, National Healthcareer Associate; or RMA, American Medical Technologists)


Condition of Employment: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, an out-of-state resident who is hired into this position must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of their start date.
