Position Highlights

The University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated comprehensive cancer center dedicated to the prevention and cure of cancer through patient care, research, and education. The UACC is the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center headquartered in the state of Arizona. The UACC is seeking candidates for a Health Educator position in our Community Outreach & Education (COE) department.

The Health Educator is crucial to the success of the COE team as this position develops and promotes health educational programming focused on cancer education and awareness to under-served populations primarily in Southern Arizona. Other duties will include gathering data, assisting in developing health education initiatives aimed at promoting cancer prevention and awareness, and coordinating with organizations throughout the state of Arizona to build and sustain community partnerships for a #CancerFreeArizona. The catchment area for the UACC is five counties in Southern Arizona (Pima, Yuma, Cochise, Pinal, and Santa Cruz) and this position is located in Tucson, AZ.

Duties & Responsibilities

Promotion and administration of cancer education programming and events to support community engagement and special projects:

  • Develops and executes community events, workshops, and/or conferences to deliver cancer education and facilitate connection to resources - this includes handling logistics (venue, speakers, agenda), determining content, and developing/executing event promotion plans.
  • Coordinates with community partners to identify and attend community outreach events to delivery cancer education throughout Southern Arizona.
  • Manages informational tables and tabling activities to promote cancer education and awareness to various demographics; responds to questions relating to cancer issues, providing relevant information and/or referring community members to appropriate community resources.

Development of cancer educational programming and materials:

  • Develops cancer educational materials for print, electronic, website, newsletters, and social media distribution relevant for cancer education and outreach activities to Arizona communities.
  • Contributes to the development and delivery of culturally-tailored educational materials relevant to different community demographics.
  • Supports the management of social media platforms and other digital channels to provide community outreach and engagement information.
  • Helps maintain databases of cancer health information for distribution.

Networking with community partners and stakeholders:

  • Participate as a UACC representative on committees and planning groups to facilitate cancer health education programming.
  • Serves as a resource for cancer center and community programs/services.
  • Identifies strategic partnerships with organizations and stakeholders that promote cancer education and awareness.

Assessment of COE programming and initiatives:

  • Monitors and evaluates progress of assigned events, initiatives, and programs.
  • Documents activities, recording information, and maintaining databases.
  • Assist in community-based research projects (i.e. assessment and promotion) to determine cancer education needs.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, REDCap, and Qualtrics.
  • Ability to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate health education programs.
  • Ability to develop educational materials and aids, and to promote and present health education initiatives.
  • Ability to document processes, maintain databases, and provide access to resources.
  • Excellent communication and networking skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
  • One (1) year of relevant work experience required.
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
  • Ability to attend community events in the evening and/or weekends.
  • Ability to travel to events throughout the state, including overnight travel.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Bachelor of Science in Public Health, or similar field.
  • Experience fostering strategic partnerships and collaborating with stakeholders.
  • Experience collecting data.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in delivering health education programs & community outreach to underserved populations.
