Organizational Unit Overview |
The
Department of Radiation Oncology was established in 1985 and is part of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. The Department proudly hosts a two-year,
CAMPEP-accredited medical physics residency program, and co-sponsors a
CAMPEP-accredited medical physics graduate program with the Department of Physics. Department faculty provide professional services as radiation oncologists and medical physicists and are actively engaged in oncology patient care, clinical research, and teaching of students, residents, and fellows. Faculty also serve in various leadership capacities at
ECU Health Medical Center, including Chief of Service of Radiation Oncology and Director of Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy.
Among the clinics where department faculty provide care is Vidant Radiation Oncology, located in the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Cancer Tower at
ECU Health Medical Center. Within this 6-story, 96-bed, 418,000 square foot Tower are several state-of-the-art treatment technologies, including: three Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators with optical surface imaging; respiratory gating and a 6DoF couch; an M6 CyberKnife; an
HDR brachytherapy suite; a GE CT simulator; GammaTile therapy; Y-90 liver directed therapy; radiopharmaceuticals; and a fifth vault configured for an
MRI linear accelerator. The Tower also houses multispecialty clinics, a 60-chair infusion center, patient support services, a women's imaging center, pharmacy, conference space, and healing gardens.
In addition, department faculty provide services at the
ECU Health Gamma Knife Center located at
ECU Health Medical Center, which houses a Gamma Knife Icon unit with dedicated
MRI and patient support space. Regardless of location, department faculty actively collaborate with
ECU Health staff to provide results-oriented, high-quality patient care. The Department also collaborates with
ECU Health Beaufort Hospital,
ECU Health Edgecombe Hospital, and
ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital to provide clinical care and quality standardization for patients across eastern North Carolina. |
Job Duties |
The Department of Radiation Oncology in the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University seeks a Medical Physicist at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to join its existing medical physics group as a full-time (12-month) fixed-term or tenure-track faculty member.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing radiation oncology physics services at
ECU Health Medical Center and at
ECU Health Radiation Oncology. The selected candidate will ensure quality, safety, and accuracy in the delivery of radiation therapy and treatment planning and will perform all required quality checks, monitors, inspections, maintenance, calibrations, and verifications. Candidate will ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state radiation regulations and accreditation/practice standards.
The candidate will participate in clinical radiation oncology duties, which may include Brachytherapy, Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery (
SRS), Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (
SBRT), External Beam Radiation Therapy (
EBRT), and Image Guided Radiotherapy (
IGRT). The successful candidate will collaborate with staff physicists and dosimetrists to provide physics support for clinical trial activities, and will participate in program, facility, and technology development.
The candidate will perform the daily duties of a clinical medical physicist and will participate in clinical physics research projects with students and staff and will also participate in medical physics professional activities, to include continuing education and maintenance of certification. The selected candidate will foster and expand upon ongoing research and academic efforts, including collaborations with ECU's Department of Physics and
UNC Chapel Hill's Department of Radiation Oncology. Candidate will participate in research to increase extramural funding, and may lecture in graduate-level, medical physics courses for the Department of Physics.
The candidate will also provide instruction in the Radiation Oncology Medical Physics Residency Program.
Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the
UNC Optional Retirement Program (

Minimum Education/Experience |
MS in Medical Physics, closely related discipline or foreign equivalent; resident training in clinical/medical physics; American Board of Radiology (
ABR) or American Board of Medical Physics (
ABMP) certification eligibility. |
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation |
Board Certified/Board Eligible as a Medical Physicist. |
