Who We Are At Hamilton Families, our mission is to end family homelessness in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since 1985, we have been meeting the most urgent needs of unhoused families in our community. Our programs specialize in preventing family homelessness when possible, providing shelter and transitional housing to families in times of need, supporting the wellbeing and academic achievement of children who experience homelessness, and quickly returning families to safe and stable housing throughout the Greater Bay Area. What You'll Do This is an engaging and rewarding opportunity that plays an integral role within the organization. We are looking for someone who is passionate about working with our participants and contributing to the fight against homelessness. The Chief Development Officer will report directly to the CEO and be part of the Executive Team. The Chief Development Officer will develop, implement, lead, and manage all fundraising efforts for Hamilton Families. Hamilton Families has an annual budget of $20+ million, including approximately $5+ million in contributed revenue. What Your Day Looks Like
- Collaborate closely with the CEO and Board to develop and execute a multi-year fundraising strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and securing $7M+ in annual revenue.
- Serve as a key advisor to the CEO on all fundraising and revenue-generation efforts, including strategic planning and donor engagement activities.
- Regularly engage with the Board's Development Committee Chair, motivating and equipping board members to actively participate in fundraising and foster a culture of philanthropy.
- Lead donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship efforts for both major and minor gifts, involving individual donors, corporate sponsors, and foundations.
- Oversee the execution of all fundraising events and campaigns, including annual appeals, special campaigns, planned giving efforts, and matching gift programs, ensuring successful donor engagement.
- Manage external communication efforts, such as newsletters, social media, and publications, to raise awareness of Hamilton Families and attract donor interest.
- Supervise the preparation of grant applications, corporate sponsorship solicitations, and donor reports, while ensuring timely, high-quality submissions.
- Oversee and maintain a comprehensive donor database, ensuring accurate tracking, timely acknowledgments, and regular reporting of progress toward fundraising goals.
- Collaborate with the CEO and CFO to set organizational budgets, update internal policies and procedures, and set best practices within the organization.
- Manage, coach, and support the Development team, fostering a collaborative work environment and implementing best practices to ensure efficient operations and staff growth.
What Makes You Successful in This Role
- Proven Fundraising Expertise: A strong track record in soliciting and securing six- and seven-figure gifts, with a deep understanding of effective fundraising strategies, including major gifts, corporate support, foundation funding, and mass annual giving.
- Leadership in Development: Experience leading and motivating a high-performing development team, with the ability to build robust systems, processes, and strategies that drive sustainable revenue growth.
- Relationship Building: Ability to cultivate and steward strong relationships with local, state, and national donors, foundations, and corporate partners, leveraging existing relationships and developing new ones to expand the donor base.
- Campaign Experience: Demonstrated success in managing large-scale fundraising campaigns and principal gifts, with the ability to set clear goals, refine approaches, and adapt based on ongoing learning.
- Collaborative Approach: Strong ability to work cross-functionally, collaborating with program staff, the CEO, and board members to align organizational goals with fundraising strategies, while "managing up" to ensure leadership engagement.
- Strategic Communications: Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to inspire and persuade board members, stakeholders, and donors, and represent the organization in external settings.
- Culturally Competent Leadership: Sensitivity to the needs of diverse staff and families experiencing homelessness, with the ability to work effectively with people from various backgrounds while maintaining a commitment to equity and inclusion.
- Results-Oriented Focus: A results-driven mindset, with a proven ability to set and meet ambitious fundraising goals, prioritize numerous activities, and execute plans that yield significant financial results for the organization.
- Innovative Problem Solver: Strong problem-solving skills, with a willingness to take risks and address complex fundraising challenges in creative and effective ways.
- Knowledge of Housing and Poverty Issues: A preferred background in homelessness, supportive housing, or poverty alleviation, which will enhance your ability to connect fundraising efforts with the organization's mission.
What You Bring
- 10+ years of development, communications and nonprofit management experience
- A bachelor's degree
- A background in working with nonprofit organizations, social services organizations, or community-based programs
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Salesforce
- Ability to travel locally to meet with donors and work some night and evening hours for donor and fundraising events
