Description
Works very independently under very general supervision of the Principal Investigator, and in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, conducts a variety of routine and some non-routine experiments at a professional level. Plays a primary role in developing new techniques and modifying old ones. Calculates, transcribes, and analyzes data using statistical techniques. Perform literature searches. Orients and trains new staff. 1. Independently performs a variety of routine and non-routine experiments and biological assays. Procedures may include: genetic crosses, phenotypic selections, P-element and chemical mutagenesis, subcloning of DNA fragments, preparation of paraffin and frozen sections, immunohistochemical staining of tissue sections. 2. With very general consultation of the Principal Investigator, designs and executes experimental protocols. Such experiments may include: genetic manipulations to create and define second site modifiers of various phenotypes; molecular biological and genetic manipulations to produce and characterize transgenic animals. 3. Supervises maintenance of Drosophila stocks including multiple transgenic lines. Requires setting up genetic crosses, phenotypic analysis, and appropriate record keeping. 4. Calculates, transcribes, and analyzes data using basic statistics, and identifies subsequent experimental priorities based on the results obtained. 5. Discusses progress of work as needed with supervisor. 6. Coordinates preparation of routine laboratory reagents, chemicals, and solutions. 7. Organizes and executes ordering of supplies and equipment. Maintains supplies inventory in accordance with department procedures. 8. Maintains established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control. Serves as the group representative to the Departmental Safety Committee. 9. Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed. Qualifications
Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in biological/physical required. BS/BA in other majors may be considered with relevant coursework. Minimum one year experience in a research laboratory. Good organizational and analytical skills; detail oriented. Demonstrates ability to reliably record, organize, and logically present data. Must process good oral and written communication skill. Basic competency in arithmetic computations. Use own initiative and ability to identify problems and troubleshoot as necessary. Ability to work cooperatively with several people, and attend to multiple tasks in the course of a workday. Willingness and ability to work with Drosophila.
