Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The part-time Specialist IV, Reference Assistant is responsible for assisting in reference or the children's library with programming and daily operations. Provides reference service at the Reference Desks under the supervision of reference librarians.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provides reference assistance to library users using print and non-print materials
  2. Assists library users with the online catalog, electronic databases, and other online systems
  3. Provides library users with directional information in locating materials
  4. Answers telephone, chat and text reference questions and refers users to appropriate resources
  5. Assists users with equipment usage and computer software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher
  6. Assists users in locating digital media in the digital media catalog and helps users to download eBooks and audio books to mobile devices
  7. Participates in library programming such as computer workshops, story times, crafts, book clubs and seminars
  8. Maintains photocopier and printers in reference area, ensuring paper and toner is full, machines are clean, and contacting the Office of Technology Services as needed for any technical issues
  9. Assists users in checking out materials from the library
  10. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft products
  • Knowledge of basic/common technology
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Good problem solver
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to work without daily supervision

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED and at least 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's degree
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Library experience
Salary

Hourly Pay Rate is 15.85
