Job Summary:

The incumbent will be responsible for Howell lab breeding colonies and experimental cohort production; this includes but is not limited to establishing breeding units, weaning progeny, ear notching, sampling and TGS submissions. This person will also be responsible for maintaining the labs animal inventory records via CLIMB. Additional responsibilities include the animal welfare of these lines - the individual will submit, respond to, and act according to Clinical Lab Animal Health (CLAM) direction. This person, will work indirectly with Howell lab trainees, and directly with other core Howell staff with regards to colony goals, planning, and future goals. As time and aptitude allows, the applicant can be trained in more advanced techniques as desired.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

  • Colony Maintenance - 70%
    • Establish, maintain, and terminate breeding colonies based on study goals
    • Wean progeny from Howell breeding colonies based on study goals
    • Animal identification
    • Ear notch or tail sample weaned progeny for genotyping
    • TGS sample submission
    • Animal Health
    • Accurately maintain animal inventory in CLIMB
    • Howell Trainee assistance as needed
  • Biomethods- 30%
    • Masters biomethod techniques and efficiently
    • Animal euthanasia in accordance with established laboratory

procedures for humanely euthanizing mice in barrier facilities

  • Animal restraint
  • Ear notch, JAX Ear Tag
  • Tail tipping sample collection

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of mouse genetics as acquired by a degree in the biological sciences or 1 - 2 years work experience in which animal husbandry and colony management and wet bench experience were major job responsibilities
  • Biomethods training, or ability to quickly obtain such, resulting in the ability to ear notch mice, collect peripheral blood, tail tips, and cull mouse colonies
  • Prior training in PCR and TGS submission
  • Regular, reliable and consistent attendance
  • Demonstrated team player with professional, positive attitude towards all JAX employees and willingness to learn and be flexible
  • Detail orientated, flexible, ability to multi-task and remain focused
  • Successful proven record of written and oral communication skills sufficient to permit clear and effective exchange of information
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage details accurately
  • Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, web browser, and database software to record and report activities

Pay Range: $18.22 - $28.93 pay rate based on experience
