Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to identify and recruit participants for the Talent Search (TS) Program (A Federal TRIO Program - U.S. Department of Education) and to perform academic coaching and advising for TRIO Talent Search participants at designated schools in the surrounding area of Guilford County School System and for those who have dropped out of high school or post secondary institutions desiring entry or re-entry into post-secondary education. Provide admissions and financial aid assistance to participants. Plan and conduct workshops/seminars, cultural activities, and college tours.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The main purpose of the TRIO Programs will be to provide our Low Income, First Generation Students with unlimited opportunities on their journey regarding their academic, personal, economical and social goals. Our Upward Bound Program provides pre-college services to 128 middle and high school students. Our Student Support Services Program provides academic support and services for 206 college students. The Educational Talent Search Program provides service to 500 individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to and complete their post-secondary education.
Work Hours 8:00AM - 5:00PM; Monday - Friday; some overtime may be required

Required Competency Knowledge - Program and Organization
Duties
Applies knowledge of policies, procedures and precedents affecting program areas.

Analyzes and explains how policies or procedures apply to programmatic and client needs.

Understands the purpose of the program's organization including its mission, services, clients and measures of business effectiveness.

Assesses academic needs and assures assistance is appropriate to the situation.

Plans and prepares marketing material and provides information for newsletters.

Develops yearly recruitment and program plan to meet grant objectives.


Required Competency Program Administration
Duties
Recruits and interviews eligible participants to enroll in the Talent Search Program.

Promotes, publicizes, schedules, and gives presentations to introduce groups and community agencies to the purpose, objectives, and program activities of the Talent Search program.

Administers student testing and surveys when necessary.

Conducts evaluations on all program activities.

Assists students in meeting the required academic standards to graduate from high school.


Required Competency Customer Service
Duties
Makes weekly visitation to high schools and home visitations when necessary.

Refers Talent Search participants who are in need of services not provided by the project to community agencies, organizations, and etc.

Provides personal and career counseling, academic guidance in the areas of course selection, admission requirements to college, financial aid assistance including applying for scholarships through personal contact, workshops and/or seminars and college tours.

Establishes and maintains sound working relationships with admissions and financial aid counselors at local post-secondary institutions.


Required Competency Information/Records Administration
Duties
Gathers information for eligibility documentation, need for program services, and post-secondary placement.

Maintains confidential records on each student.

Compiles statistical data for monthly and annual performance reports and continuation grant.

Assures that all program services and students' contacts are documented.

Places information in the students' folders and input data into the computer database system.
