Position Description:

Purpose

A Research Technician position is available in the Department of Biochemistry focused on the structure and function of epigenetic proteins in human health and disease.

We welcome highly motivated and well-organized candidates to support department research through projects, maintenance, and communication of data, and execution of laboratory experiments.

Primary Functions

* Carry out experimental designs for sponsored research projects and perform routine experiments.

* Record and compile accurate records and communicate summaries of experimental results.

* Assist with the evaluation, interpretation and assessment of experimental data and quality control of assays.

* Participate in meetings with the principal investigator and research staff to evaluate/interpret data validity as needed.

* Prepare technical reports, write and maintain laboratory protocols, and prepare and maintain safety manuals and other laboratory documentation.

* Assist the Principal Investigator with disseminating laboratory information via email or web-based communication.

* Carry out assigned duties for ordering and maintaining supply of inventories.

* Maintain general cleanliness and organization of the laboratory.

* Operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on specialized equipment used in research including automated and robotic instrumentation.

* Prepare media and maintain cells by various culturing techniques.

* Prepare laboratory stocks, including protein expression constructs, buffers, gels, and other common reagents or supplies.

* Carry out recombinant protein purification from bacteria using various chromatographic and biochemical techniques and assess protein purity using standard methods.

* Carry out routine molecular biology techniques, including bacterial transduction and preparation of agar plates and glycerol stocks.

* Perform x-ray crystallography screening and solve protein structures with small molecules bound.

* Perform daily lab operations in the absence of the supervisor or Principal Investigator.

Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

Knowledge of biology, chemistry, mathematics, documentation, and records management.

Data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills.

Minimum Required Education: Bachelor's degree

Minimum Required Experience: No experience required

Preferred Education: B.S. or B.A. in chemistry, biochemistry, or related field

Preferred Experience: Protein expression and purification. Biophysical and enzymatic assays. Structural biology.
