I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Responsible for applying the risk management process of identifying risks, setting priorities, and mitigating the risks through elimination, prevention, reduction, and transfer.
2. Responsible for identifying incidents with potential for liability and financial loss, using loss prevention monitors, including occurrence (incident reports), focused occurrences and patient complaints.
3. Conducts investigations of incidents/ adverse events with possible quality of care, systems, regulatory and/or potential liability questions and concerns.
4. Reviews daily occurrences through the on-line occurrence reporting system, aimed at identifying significant events, as well as patterns and trends, in order to identify and facilitate appropriate risk management and quality improvement interventions.
5. Serves as a resource and consultant for physicians, residents, patient care representatives, and other UMMH staff regarding risk management/loss control/loss prevention strategies. Conducts independent clinical department risk assessments and presents findings to department leadership.
6. Responsible for planning and executing Root Cause Analysis (RCA) in a timely manner, including conducting appropriate staff interviews and preparing various RCA documents. Responsible for monitoring progress on action item follow up in conjunction with UMMH senior leadership, physicians, and the Patient Safety Committee.
7. Coordinates and conducts investigations of potential/actual litigation cases with claims adjustors, and defense counsel as appropriate. Prepares observation cases and makes recommendations for reserves as appropriate.
8. Responsible for identifying and communicating potential regulatory reports to (e.g., DPH, the Joint Commission, and the Board of Registration in Medicine (BORM), and the staff of Regulatory Affairs. Primarily responsible for preparing BORM SQR, BORM Annual and Semi-annual and MedWatch reports. Participates in preparing DPH reports in conjunction with Patient Safety/Regulatory staff.
9. Provides weekly risk management orientation to new UMMH employees.
10. Proactively presents educational presentations to physicians, nurses, and other employees, focusing on patient safety, adverse medical event management, quality improvement and loss prevention/loss control strategies to reduce risk and limit liability exposure for the organization.
11. Develops and revises policies and procedures specific to Risk Management and other areas as required.
12. Ensures that concerns regarding product alerts and product recalls are addressed using the ECRI electronic Alert Tracker system.
13. Although this position is listed as primary location at UMass Memorial Medical Center, travel to member campuses on a weekly/daily basis is required. Travel to UMass Memorial Marlborough Hospital, UMass Memorial Health Alliance-Clinton Hospital (both Health Alliance and Clinton campuses), UMass Memorial Health Harrington and CMG locations.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Bachelor's degree in healthcare field.
2. Current unrestricted driver's license.

Preferred:
1. Master's Degree in health-related field or MBA.
2. RN license.
3. Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management certification (or eligibility to sit for certification) or other Risk Management certification.

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Minimum of 5 years clinical experience.
2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in fundamentals of quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
3. Proven ability to function independently and communicate effectively at all levels of an organization.
4. Strong organizational, analytical and computer technology skills.

Preferred:
1. Experience in Healthcare Risk Management.
2. Experience in an academic medical center.
3. Database experience.
