About the Role:
David Evans and Associates Inc (DEA's) Southern California Transportation Group is seeking a highly skilled Traffic Signal Design Engineer to join our innovative Smart Mobility team. In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to complex transportation projects that enhance mobility and safety across Southern California. This position is based in our Apple Valley, Ontario, or Tustin offices, with occasional work in other regional locations.

As a Traffic Signal Design Engineer, you will apply a diverse range of engineering principles and practices to design and optimize traffic signal systems. You will be entrusted with making independent decisions on critical engineering problems and methodologies, ensuring project success from concept to implementation.

Key Responsibilities:

* Traffic Signal System Design: Apply your in-depth knowledge of traffic signal design and operations, including signal optimization and systems, to develop and execute traffic signal design plans.

* Regulatory Compliance: Demonstrate thorough familiarity with the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD) to ensure compliance with state standards in all designs.

* Independent Plan Preparation: Prepare traffic signal design plans with minimal direction, including conduit schedules, specifications, and all required elements for a complete and accurate design.

* Plan Coordination: Coordinate traffic signal designs with signing and pavement marking plans to ensure seamless integration of all traffic control elements.

* Supervision & Technical Guidance: Lead subordinate engineering designers, providing guidance on signal design tasks, monitoring project progress, and ensuring technical accuracy and compliance with project specifications.

* Project Development: Design a variety of traffic signal projects using survey data and other design information, producing detailed drawings for signal installations, pavement markings, and signage. Develop accurate engineer's estimates for the probable cost of construction.

* Design Software Proficiency: Utilize AutoCAD as the primary design tool, ensuring all designs meet project requirements and are delivered on time.

* Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate with other engineering and planning disciplines, coordinating design activities to ensure projects are completed within scope, on schedule, and within budget.

* Field Investigations: Conduct site visits for project field reviews, investigations, and surveys, including CCTV site surveys and signal equipment inventories. Coordinate with local and state highway agencies to gather as-built information and utility providers for power connection and underground infrastructure identification.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Transportation Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Civil (PE) or Traffic Engineering (TE) License in California, or possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification and ability to take PE exam within one year.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in traffic signal design, demonstrating hands-on expertise in developing comprehensive signal design plans.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for traffic signal design, including the preparation of accurate and detailed design drawings.
  • Strong technical writing skills, with the ability to articulate complex concepts clearly and concisely in reports, proposals, and other documentation.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Professional Civil Engineering License in the State of California (PE).
  • Proficiency in MicroStation is highly desirable, providing additional flexibility for design projects.
  • Experience in designing Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and preparing traffic signal timing and optimization plans using SYNCHRO software is a strong plus.
  • Experience in preparing Signing and Striping plans, as well as Traffic Control Plans, is an advantage.
  • Specific experience preparing traffic signal designs that adhere to Caltrans and LADOT standards and formats is highly valued.
