The Department of Computer Science seeks candidates for Academic Advisor II (Academic Advising Professional II). The Academic Advisor will support undergraduate students in our majors and minors in computer science and artificial intelligence.. The Academic Advisor is a critical member of the Academic Services Office which provides service and support to over 1500 undergraduates (and growing!), 100 graduate students, and 29 faculty members. Duties & Responsibilities

Student advising and advising related tasks:

  • Assesses individual students' stage of development (academic and career) and promotes their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks.
  • Evaluates use of transfer credit and determines whether or not degree requirements have been met.
  • Supports students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.
  • Assists undergraduate students in determining educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring majors, minors, and career options.
  • Identifies educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists student with evaluating each option, including possible outcomes and their implications.
  • Counsels students on options to satisfy degree requirements.
  • Monitors students' academic progress, determines satisfactory progress toward degree, and assists students in developing a plan for completion of the program requirements.
  • Identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring, course offerings, workshops).
  • Advises students with academic difficulty on development of an academic action plan, and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance as needed.
  • Using University systems, maintains student files and records and advisors notes.
  • Maintains knowledge of regulations and policies that impact students' educational options.
  • Completes degree audit checks for graduating students.
  • Collaborates with advising team, advisor lead, and director to plan, develop, and present student support programming (workshops, informational sessions, webinars, etc.) and regular department/college events (new student, transfer, and international student orientations, meet your major fair, recruitment, student visits).
  • Consults with advising team, advisor lead, and director on highly complex or unusual situations.
    Assists with the major admissions process.

Non-advising related service to the department, aligned with department mission, vision, and goals:

  • Has ability and knowledge to serve as a representative of the advising team and/or staff on department, college, and/or university committees.
  • Represents department at recruitment and transfer student events.
  • When needed, helps support processes related to the undergraduate program including wait-list management, course enrollment, and/or coordination of new student and transfer orientations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 3 years of academic advising experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree.
  • Previous experience with student development, activities, and engagement.
  • Experience with word processing and spreadsheet software programs and applications and student management databases like PeopleSoft/UAccess.
