Position Summary
The College of Population Health (COPH) at the University of New Mexico's Health Sciences Center, serves New Mexico's communities, government and non-profit agencies, businesses and health-related organizations. The COPH houses three education programs: the Bachelor of Science in Population Health (BSPH), the Master of Public Health (MPH) and the newly created PhD in Health Equity Sciences. Our faculty conduct cutting-edge work around community engagement and involvement in research, evaluation of community programs, and improvement of the medical and behavioral health infrastructure in New Mexico. COPH invites applications for an Accountant 3. The ideal team member will be a detail-oriented, results-driven, open-minded professional with leadership and development skills to coordinate financial goals and fiscal work with a clear understanding of both unrestricted and restricted funding sources, while working with faculty and staff within COPH and external to COPH. The successful applicant will be responsible for managing, monitoring, and reconciling the financial activities of unrestricted, grant and contract funding within the College in collaboration with the COPH research and finance teams, Principal Investigators and the COPH leadership and administration. Duties will include performing advanced accounting functions across both unrestricted and restricted funding including operations management support, award set-up, contract and grant administration through the award life cycle, and award closeout.

Detailed Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the Financial Analyst and Sr. Program Manager with creation of policies and procedures required for college operations and contract administration
  • After attaining proficiency in restricted accounts, the Accountant will also serve as backup for the Financial Analyst including assisting with preparation of all UNM required reporting including Categorization of Reserves, mid-year projections, budget/salary planner
  • Maintain compliance with UNM/HSC, Federal, State, and other funding agencies' fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Reviewing fully-executed agreement(s) for exclusions and limitations, preparing award budget sheets for index creation, setting up shared files for monitoring of project life cycle
  • Develop and maintain forecasting tools and monitor appropriate funding levels
  • Key contributor for monthly financial preparation and reporting, budgeting and forecasting; budget management
  • Develop, interpret, analyze, and present financial data and make recommendations at a level understood by intended audiences such as principal investigators, executive leadership, financial and clinical directors, and colleagues.
  • Evaluating costs for allowability, allocability, and reasonableness per CFR 200
  • Approves purchasing requests including P-card activity ensuring compliance, purchase requisitions, vendor payments, and journal entries submitted by other fiscal personnel within the college.
  • Compile supporting documentation for invoicing and gather financial data per funding agency requests
  • Review audit inquiries and prepare responses
  • Prepare internal budget revisions
  • Prepare faculty, staff, students salary allocations and redistributions
  • Process complex procurement requests
  • Prepare journal vouchers, budget entries and correcting entries
  • Adhere to agency deadlines and requests for extensions
  • Reconcile direct and indirect costs
  • Ensure cost share commitments are met
  • Process final closeout documents
  • Work in a team environment, be flexible and adaptable to changes in assignments and the work environment, work independently, manage time efficiently and multi-task effectively.
  • Collaborate with people from different disciplines with varying degrees of business and technical experience and maintain good working relations.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree with an accounting emphasis
  • Proficient in MS Excel to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare reports
  • Knowledge of University Policy/Procedures and applicable local, state, and federal guidelines
  • Experience working with UNM financial programs such as Banner, MyReports, Chrome River, LoboMart
  • Ability to initiate various accounting transactions (such as journal entries and labor redistributions)
  • Experience with account reconciliations and developing multi-year forecasts
  • Demonstrated experience with contract and grant administration through the award life cycle
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate financial information and compliance requirements to staff, faculty, leadership, and other professionals
