Summary

Helps physicians, health practitioners, and psychiatrists work with patients with mental or emotional disorders by utilizing counseling principles and nursing training. Records patients' physical condition by taking vital signs and observing behavior, and organizes social or recreational activities to encourage patient participation.

Job Duties

  • Provides direct patient care and management of patients with medical and behavioral issues.
  • Assists in the direct care & management of patients across all age ranges with medical & behavioral issues as directed by the treatment team.
  • Assists with day to day management of the patient(s) on an inpatient psychiatric unit and assists with activities of daily living for patients unable to perform these activities.
  • Assists clients in learning how to meet basic needs, such as medication management, developing life skills, pursuing recreational and leisure activities, housing, transportation, legal, medical and financial assistance, and securing appropriate entitlements.
  • Plans therapeutic recreation for groups, steers department philosophy toward purposeful interventions and therapies and works with other clinical staff on special projects and duties.
  • Observes and documents client compliance with medication regimes as dictated in the treatment plan.
  • Maintains continuous alertness and response to patient safety issues and participates in maintaining a safe and secure patient care environment.
  • Assists clinical staff in meeting and monitoring the client's medical and health care needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 6 months of direct patient care experience preferably in an acute BH setting or BH education setting
  • Ability to handle significant amounts of confidential patient information.
  • Ability to handle crises calmly and maturely.
  • Demonstrates ability to adapt to emergency situations.
  • Familiarity with community resources and the delivery of case management services.
  • Knowledge of mental health and/or substance abuse.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support - State of Pennsylvania
  • Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Certification - State of Pennsylvania

Preferred Qualifications
  • Successful completion of core and specialty orientation. Code Orange training required.
  • Successful completion of Crisis Management Course.

Physical Demands

Lift and carry 25 lbs. frequent sitting/standing, frequent keyboard use, *patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
