Position Description
The Loyola University Chicago School of Social Work invites applications for 2 nine-month tenure-track positions at the assistant or associate professor rank, expected to begin early August 2025.
The Institution and School
Loyola University Chicago (

Celebrating its 100th anniversary of
MSW Accreditation in 2021, the
SSW offers
BSW,
MSW, & PhD degrees. The
BSW and
MSW programs were successfully reaffirmed in 2024. The school launched the nation's first online, bilingual (Spanish)
MSW program in fall 2019 and an online
MSW program in 2022. The
SSW provides additional opportunities for students to expand their worldview through online classes with international partner universities and a robust reciprocal immersion program focusing on refugees and immigrants in Mexico at the U.S. border. In addition, the
SSW will launch a comprehensive behavioral health simulation program in 2025 and has several innovative certificate programs providing students with cutting edge training to prepare them for practice.
Faculty are mentored and supported to pursue their research and scholarship agendas, may seek summer stipends supplemental research funds, and may apply for faculty development research leaves to support their tenure track careers. Faculty and staff are committed to transformative education to serve anti-racist aims. Current curricular innovations include a week-long community immersion orientation for incoming
MSW students, developing pedagogy that infuses advocacy for social justice throughout all coursework, making internship education more accessible via augmented simulation with standardized patients, and using traditional and innovative technologies in teaching and learning.
Duties and Responsibilities
Successful applicants will:
- Advance existing research agendas and records of scholarship, or have demonstrated potential to build a research agenda and record of scholarship
- Teach in-person as well as online/hybrid formats, across degree programs and across curricular domains, with attention to the following curricular areas:
- Mezzo/macro-organizational and community practice
- Older adults/Gero ed
- Social work theory and practice
- Advanced clinical practice
- Social work policy, (e.g., abolition of child welfare)
- Contribute to service at the school, university, community, and professional levels

Qualifications |
Minimum qualifications include an
MSW degree and PhD degree in social work or a related field, two years of post-
MSW practice experience, and a record of research, scholarship, and teaching appropriate for the school's requirements for the rank sought. To be considered at the Assistant Professor level, the candidate must have clear evidence of potential for excellence in research, scholarship, teaching, and service. To be considered at the rank of Associate Professor, applicants must have an established research agenda, including a strong record of scholarship and seeking funded research, as well as mentorship activities with students.
Preferred qualifications include a record of interdisciplinary research and teaching interests focused on the African American/Black diaspora, with an ability to engage in the experiences of other peoples of African descent and other communities of color. Relatedly, we seek applicants who will bring intersectional lived experience to anti-racist, abolitionist, and decolonial perspectives to teaching, research, scholarship, and service. |

Applicants must submit a Curriculum Vitae and a cover letter indicating the position and rank sought. The cover letter should detail the applicant's qualifications and experiences as they align with the mission and work of the
SSW and
LUC. Applicants should also submit a writing sample in which they had a significant role, preferably first author. The writing sample should be a published peer-reviewed paper, or one under review. Candidates assessed for initial interviews will be required to supply the names and contact information of three individuals prepared to speak to the candidate's professional qualifications and preparedness for this position. References will be contacted only after the applicant is short-listed to engage with our faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders on a campus visit.
