Position Summary

We seek a dynamic and experienced individual to lead our Campus Recreation programs as the Director.
Position Overview: The Director of Campus Recreation will play a key leadership role in shaping the future of our fitness and recreational programs. This position is responsible for the management, development, and promotion of comprehensive fitness and intramural programs that meet the diverse needs of the university community. The Director will oversee various activities, from event planning and staff development to budget management and strategic planning. This is an exciting opportunity to create a lasting impact on campus life and student engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
Program & Event Management:

  • Oversee the planning, development, and execution of comprehensive Fitness, Intramural Sports, and Club Sports programs.
  • Schedule and manage recreational facilities, events, and special activities, including outdoor adventure trips.
  • Develop and promote both single-sex and co-recreational leagues, ensuring a variety of fitness and recreational opportunities.


Leadership & Staff Development:

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate a large and diverse team of student workers, including sports officials, supervisors, and assistants.
  • Guide staff in understanding program policies, emergency procedures, and officiating mechanics, while providing ongoing professional development.
  • Supervise and evaluate part-time and full-time professional staff within the fitness and recreation programs.
  • Provide appropriate coaching and feedback to staff to help with continual improvement.

Budget & Resource Optimization:

  • Develop, implement, and manage programs within budget constraints, maximizing resource efficiency.
  • Manage budget through appropriate distribution of funds, the monitoring of spending, and the maximal use of resources.
  • Identify and prioritize community needs and interests, aligning them with available resources to enhance program offerings.
  • Maintain and purchase necessary equipment while adhering to budgetary limitations.

Policy Implementation & Risk Management:

  • Implement, enforce, and assist in the development of policies and procedures for fitness and recreation programs.
  • Ensure program and participant safety through consistent monitoring of equipment, facilities, and event management.
  • Administer discipline for participants who do not adhere to program guidelines and ensure compliance with university and program policies.
  • Organize and execute training on processes and procedures to mitigate risks.

Strategic Planning & Advisory:

  • Participate in the strategic planning process under the Division of Student Affairs, establishing goals that support the university's strategic initiatives.
  • Advise student advisory groups and assist in developing leadership and management skills within the fitness and intramural sports units.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations to the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs for Health and Well-being regarding program safety and effectiveness.
  • Engage in thorough assessment and program evaluation methods.
  • Use data to inform programming, services, and supports.
  • Serve as a leader in health and wellness programming, services, and supports.
  • Assist the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs for Health and Well-being with integrated programming efforts.
  • Develop and continually update comprehensive operations manual to ensure seamless transitions and operations.

Marketing & Community Engagement:

  • Develop and execute marketing strategies to promote fitness and recreation programs, special events, and recreational opportunities.
  • Engage with the university community to encourage participation and ensure programs meet the evolving needs and interests of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive University Recreation branding campaign and yearly calendar.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience managing fitness, intramural, or recreational sports programs, preferably in a university setting.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with a track record of successfully supervising large teams.
  • Budget management experience with the ability to optimize resources effectively.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and risk management practices in recreational settings.
  • Passion for promoting health and wellness within a diverse university community.
