The Statistical Ecology and Forest Science Lab ( https://doserlab.com/) led by Jeff Doser in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources ( FER) at North Carolina State University seeks a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in Quantitative Ecology/Forest Science. The postdoctoral research will contribute to the development and application of new quantitative tools (e.g., statistical models, R packages) for the analysis of large spatio-temporal forest inventory and/or wildlife data. The position provides a unique opportunity to advance quantitative research that has immediate application to forest management and conservation. There will be numerous opportunities to collaborate with researchers across NC State, government agencies (US Forest Service and National Park Service), as well as other academic institutions.

Primary duties of the Postdoctoral Research Scholar include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Apply hierarchical Bayesian spatial modeling techniques to inform management and conservation of eastern US forests and wildlife.
  • Collaborate on projects related to the development of new quantitative tools that support national forest inventory data user needs, particularly surrounding forest carbon monitoring and reporting. For example, there will be opportunities to contribute to the development and maintenance of the next generation of the rFIA R package for analysis of US Forest Inventory and Analysis data.
  • Prepare, submit, and publish peer-reviewed academic articles as lead author and contribute to additional manuscripts as a co-author.
  • Teach one undergraduate course in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources as the Instructor of Record.

Requirements and Preferences


Work Schedule Monday to Friday 8 am to 5 pm.
Department Required Skills

  • Experience using hierarchical statistical models (e.g., generalized linear mixed models, geostatistical models) in ecological and/or forestry research.
  • Substantial experience with the R programming language.
  • Strong writing skills.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Experience with advanced statistical techniques such as hierarchical modeling, Bayesian analysis, spatial statistics, and/or small area estimation.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to use advanced statistical approaches to answer applied questions in ecology and/or forestry.
  • Substantial experience with the R programming language.
  • Strong writing skills and previous publishing experience.
  • Ph.D. in ecology, forestry, applied statistics, or related discipline.
