About the Department |
The Department of Applied Linguistics &
ESL at Georgia State University is a vibrant academic unit that focuses on adult and post-secondary language learning, teaching, and research. Our faculty specialize in areas such as second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, teacher education, writing, language assessment, corpus linguistics, and educational technology. We offer a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics, as well as certificates in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (
TEFL) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (
TESOL).
The
Intensive English Program
(IEP), established in 1998, is a cornerstone of the department. With a dedicated team of four faculty members, the
IEP offers a rigorous 5-level program designed to develop the language and cultural skills necessary for students to succeed in academic settings. The
IEP has taught thousands of international students who have gone on to pursue successful academic careers.
In addition to its core academic mission, the
IEP has established a strong reputation for working with international professionals through partnerships with government agencies and organizations, including developing
EFL teacher exchange programs. Through these initiatives, the program enhances the multicultural and global learning environment, while fostering collaboration with partners both within Georgia State University and across the world. |
Position Description |
The Department of Applied Linguistics/
ESL at Georgia State University invites applications for this half-time non-tenure-track position (Lecturer) in the Intensive English Program (
IEP) to begin January 1, 2025.
The standard workload for a half-time lecturer in the
IEP is 20 hours per week, with 80% teaching and 20% service. Teaching responsibilities for this position will include two courses (six credit hours) per semester. Service obligations include assisting with orientation, placement testing, curriculum development, supporting social/recreational activities for students, and working with
IEP faculty/staff on special projects and grants.
This is a half-time in-person position in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. |
Required Experience |
- Extensive experience (three years minimum) in teaching English for Academic Purposes in an IEP at the university level
Documented success in teaching ESL across online, hybrid, and in-person modalities:
- Must provide evidence of teaching in at least two of these modalities (course syllabi, screenshots of online courses, student feedback forms).
- Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience in ESL across multiple settings.
- Demonstrates innovative student engagement strategies through documented examples (student testimonials, sample lesson plans, or engagement data).
Proven experience in curriculum development and modification:
- Must show at least 2 examples of curricula developed or adapted for different student proficiency levels (course syllabi, sample lesson plans, or curriculum calendars).
- Evidence of the impact on student outcomes, such as assessment data or student progress reports.
Experience in mentoring and training English Language Teachers (ELT):
- At least 2 years of experience in mentoring or providing professional development for ESL teachers (observation reports, teacher feedback, or rubrics).
- Must submit at least one anonymized example of observation reports or rubrics used during teacher training/mentoring.

- Evidence of collaboration with colleagues within a program and across departments/colleges
- Experience with successfully planning, coordinating, and budgeting short-term programs in English and U.S. culture for international university students
- Active professional engagement with the field of Applied Linguistics and TESOL
- Experience working on special projects locally (Atlanta community programs) and/or internationally (government-sponsored and university-to-university programs)
- Interest in participating actively in the building of new programs, such as English for Occupational Purposes and ESP programs in academic and non-academic areas.
