Position Summary: Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a part-time Archaeological Field Technician to assist with Phase I through Phase III archaeological investigations. A Bachelor's degree in anthropology or a related field and prior experience in all phases of archaeological investigation are required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in Texas and Southeastern United States. Successful applicants will be considered for anticipated long-term projects in the region.

Lodging (individual hotel room) and per diem will be provided. Drive time to and from the project area will also be compensated. Rate based on experience, and number of hours per week will be based on project workload.

Compensation is $22.00 - $26.00/hour, commensurate with experience, education, and certifications.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Assist Project and Senior Archaeologists during field work
  • Assist with archaeological survey, involving the hand-excavation of Shovel Test Pits (STPs) and mechanical backhoe trenching.
  • Assist with testing and/or data recovery involving controlled unit excavation work
  • Aid in identifying any pre-contact or historic artifacts encountered during the STPs, backhoe trench, or test unit excavation



Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and have completed an accredited archaeological field school
  • Prior experience in all phases of archaeological investigation
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures)
  • Solid organizational skills, communication skills, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn new tasks



Preferred Experience



  • Experience with GPS/Trimble navigation and data collection
  • Experience in CRM-based archaeological survey and/or excavation
  • Knowledge of Texas and/or Southeastern US history and prehistory
  • Knowledge of historic/prehistoric material culture and artifact processing
  • Ability to navigate using compass and USGS topographic map
  • Ability to develop site maps and excavation drawings



Working Conditions

Work is performed in the field 95% of the time. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.

Work is performed within a general office environment 5% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
