Position Highlights

The University of Arizona is seeking an Assistant Director of the Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (AzVDL), a service unit of the Office of Research, Innovation and Impact (RII).

The AzVDL seeks an experienced veterinarian to join our leadership team as Assistant Director of the laboratory. This position will answer to the Director. The AzVDL is looking for a creative and enthusiastic addition to support our land grant mission.

The AzVDL serves a wide customer base composed of university units, state and federal agencies, zoos and private veterinarians and animal owners. The ideal applicant for the Assistant Director position will have strong communication and interpersonal skills. Candidate needs to acknowledge that customer satisfaction is a core metric of success at the AzVDL. Candidates should have strong veterinary diagnostic expertise and experience with epidemiology. Candidate should be experienced with strategic planning, outreach programs with stakeholders, clients, colleagues, and private owners. In addition to the administrative role, consideration of faculty appointment is negotiable, dependent on qualifications and interest.

The AzVDL provides accurate and timely diagnostic assistance in animal health to veterinarians, animal owners, university researchers, and state and federal agencies. The AzVDL is a member of the NAHLN network and is constantly working to maintain readiness to support the NAHLN Mission. The AzVDL works closely with the office of the State Veterinarian, USDA Area Veterinarian in Charge, Arizona Game and Fish Department, and other state and federal agencies. The laboratory serves a diverse client base with submissions from wild animals, zoo animals, pet animals, horses, and food-producing animals. The AzVDL also works closely with the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine and other colleges and units to support teaching, research and service.

The laboratory is one of the original twelve laboratories partnered in the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) and participates in supporting the Cooperative Extension's Arizona Livestock Incident Response Team (ALIRT). ALIRT was designed to enhance the diagnosis of unexplained mortality events in livestock.

There will be opportunities to work with and mentor veterinary students as well as continuing education opportunities.

  • Consulting with clients.
  • Responsible for building strong and effective outreach and education programs.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead in a team atmosphere.
  • Strong understanding of client needs.
  • Ability to meet expected deadlines.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required. In addition to the education and experience minimum qualifications, DVM and Board Certification required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of related work experience, including 2 years of managerial experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in an accredited veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
  • Experience working with clients, stakeholders and staff.
  • Experience providing education to clients and stakeholders.
  • Experience supporting a quality management system.
