OVERVIEW

Merrick & Company (www.merrick.com) is a 1,000 person employee-owned engineering, architecture, surveying, and geospatial firm, headquartered in Colorado, with offices and employees located throughout North America and in the United Kingdom. Merrick is seeking a Senior Payroll Administrator who will contribute to Merrick's payroll function, assisting in ensuring pay is processed on time, accurately, efficiently as possible, in compliance with government regulations, as well as with company policies. Depending on project needs, Merrick may occasionally run payroll for union employees. This position will occasionally need to reach out to our payroll provider, UKG, and Human Resources for collaboration and problem solving. The Senior Payroll Administrator will report to the Payroll Manager.

This position requires a motivated professional with strong, detailed process skills and a positive, problem-solving and eager to learn attitude. Merrick is growing and needs an individual willing to work on several projects at a time while simultaneously processing bi-weekly payrolls for assigned locations. Merrick is headquartered in Colorado, but has offices and employees located across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.


WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Responsible for the accurate preparation, documentation, distribution and reconciliation of bi-weekly payroll process
    • Process and review payroll to ensure timely and accurate payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions for all assigned locations.
    • Assist with timesheet approvals and posting when necessary.
    • Prepare required tax filings and other reporting.
    • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
    • Respond to and resolve any inquiries regarding paychecks or payroll reporting.
  • As needed and assigned, guarantee payroll is processed in accordance with applicable union contracts.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage and hour laws and best practices.
  • Assist with the accuracy of Merrick's tax reporting and start correspondence with UKG, the states, and countries in which Merrick operates escalating as necessary and resolving issues promptly.
  • Will participate in the audit process under the direction of Payroll manager by providing records and documentation as requested.
  • Regularly communicate transparently with team and supervisor so all are working toward same department goals.
  • Act as a backup for other members of the department to ensure departmental coverage when needed.
  • Support Staff Accountants in tasks as needed to complete Payroll-related tasks.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of payroll and accounting related experience required.
  • General knowledge of office equipment including but not limited to copiers, Teams, and Outlook email.
  • Advanced PC skills in preparing, navigating, and analyzing Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, and PowerPoint presentations.
  • Previous experience with processing payroll to ensure timely and accurate payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions for all assigned locations.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
  • Experience with resolving inquiries regarding paychecks or payroll reporting.
  • Capacity to manage multiple priorities and meet all required deadlines as given.
  • Ability to maintain focus in a cubicle/open office setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer services skills; this role will interact with all levels throughout the organization.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; this role requires managing individual communications related to employees' personal financial situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and act professionally.
  • Employment for this position is dependent upon the successful completion of a credit check

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree or higher in accounting or related field.
  • Knowledge base of payroll regulations and laws required with a FPC or CPP.
  • Experience in processing union, Canadian, and other international payrolls.
  • Experience with audit process by providing records and documentation as requested.
  • UKG and Deltek Costpoint software experience.
  • Experience in preparing required tax filings and other reporting.
  • Prior experience in an Architecture or Engineering firm with governmental contracts.
