Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position |
The Director of Intellectual Property Development and Commercialization leads the Office charged with the cultivation, assessment, protection and commercialization of NC A&T intellectual property.
The Director serves as the licensed patent agent for the University and the technical liaison between the Vice Chancellor for Research (VC
DOR) and outside law firms hired for patent prosecution, agencies and businesses, as well as the chief business and contractual link for the Division, leading efforts to form partnerships with private businesses and reviewing patent license requests to determine feasibility.
The Director will supervise all Technology Transfer operations including administration of the university's licensee relationships, facilitation of relationships with prospective licensees, and negotiating/revising/terminating licenses as needed.
The Director will encourage and train university researchers to engage in IP protection. The Director will manage the Technology Transfer Specialist and Licensing Associate as well as student interns as necessary. |
Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The Division of Research administers and manages research and sponsored programs as well as technology transfer and commercialization for the University. Headed by the Vice Chancellor for Research, the division is made up of the Vice Chancellor's management team, the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Office of Contracts and Grants, the Office of Research Development, the Office of Ethics and Compliance, the Office of Research Laboratory Operations and Safety, and the Office of Intellectual Property Development and Commercialization . The Division coordinates interdisciplinary funding opportunities among the University's colleges and schools and assists in transforming research into marketable economic opportunities |
Minimum Requirements |
* License as a patent agent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (
USPTO) and a minimum of five years' experience in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications
* Experience and background in teaching and conducting research in an academic environment and knowledge of research administration and management of projects
* Experience in and knowledge of writing proposals in
STEM areas in a team environment
* Strong communication skills, oral and written, and to be able to successfully interface with faculty, administration, and students at all levels
* Strong computer skills, especially with Microsoft office and applications |
