Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-Greater New York) is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050. We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County including emergency, transitional and permanent housing. Our services extend to families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs, and others in need, including a special education preschool program.

Position: Assistant Vice President of Individual Giving

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Assistant Vice President of Individual Giving is responsible for creating, managing, and scaling a comprehensive major giving program. The Assistant Vice President works closely with the President and CEO, Board of Directors, Chief Development Officer, and other senior leaders to cultivate relationships with high-capacity, high net worth individual donors and prospects capable of making five- and six-figure gifts.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree required with 7+ years of professional experience in managing relationships with major donors. Familiarity with issues pertaining to homeless services, affordable housing, behavioral health and substance use disorders, economic empowerment, and intimate partner violence is a plus. Other relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities include:



  • Passion for anti-poverty work and adherence to the highest ethical standards.
  • Ability to cultivate and sustain positive relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • A proven track record of securing five- and six-figure gifts from individuals.
  • Experience scaling a major giving program, including hiring and mentoring a team.
  • Knowledge of fundraising best practices and trends in the non-profit sector.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with demonstrated experience conveying complex concepts in a clear, persuasive, and succinct manner.



Principal Responsibilities:



  1. In partnership with the Chief Development Officer, develop a major gifts program and team that is aligned with VOA-GNY's vision, strategic plan, and fundraising priorities.
  2. Proactively plan and personally manage a portfolio of existing and prospective major gift donors, using best practices in moves management and donor meetings to identify and cultivate qualified relationships; solicit, close and steward gifts.
  3. Become an expert in describing the work of VOA-GNY and the experience of the clients we serve, getting to know staff members, programs, and clients in order to articulate the case for support. Write and develop compelling donor proposals and impact reports.
  4. Guide cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual prospects for Chief Development Officer, CEO, and members of the Board of Directors.
  5. Develop yearly revenue targets for individuals in close partnership with the Chief Development Officer; monitor and report on progress, evaluating trends and adapting strategies as needed.
  6. Collaborate in the planning of donor-related events, including cultivation and stewardship events, annual fundraiser events, and other fundraising activities.
  7. Guide and support development staff to stay informed about industry trends, donor interests, and major gifts fundraising and implement strategies to optimize fundraising results.
  8. Perform other related duties as requested.
